JLocker10
Dodgers traded Dee Gordon Stupid move. Dee Gordon's speed was a difference maker for us last year. Only maybe Billy Hamilton can rival Dee in speed. Speed like that is hard to find and we traded him for a back of the rotation starter. Ugh. I'm ok with the Rollins move though not thrilled. It's a bridge move to Seager.

Guest
If I had only one vote it would have to go to Raines. 2nd best lead off hitter of all time to Rickey that I saw. And there wasn't a whole lot to separate them I don't think when they were both in their primes.

And there wasn't a whole lot to separate them I don't think when they were both in their primes. Except that Raines' prime was only for about 5-6 years. The guy was a contact hitter who barely got over 2600 hits despite playing for 23 seasons, doesn't have 1000 RBI, doesn't have 4,000 TB, even his runs scored only ranks 52nd all time. His most valuable stat is stolen bases and while impressive, I don't see it enough to get him into the hall. Good player, but not Hall of Fame worthy
Guest
One tidbit about Tim Raines' career. If not for the strike in 1981, Raines probably breaks Brock's stolen base record before Rickey does. As a rookie in 1981, in spite of not taking over the starting job until early May, Raines stole 71 bases in 88 games...that's a pace of 130 over 162. You have to be cognizant of his unique skill set. We are talking about the second greatest lead off hitter of the modern era. If he bats third then Worsleys' numbers are more relevant. His SB% was always much higher than Rickey's BTW...it was an absurd 85+% through the prime years of his career. He has the 4th highest WAR of any player 1981-1987 and every other guy is in the HOF. Here is something I clipped from this article. http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/eye-on-baseball/24909664/hall-of-fame-candidate-breakdown-tim-raines From 1981-84, Raines led the NL in stolen bases each season, averaging 79 steals per year. He also stole 70 bases on the nose in both 1985 and 1986. From 1981-92, Raines stole 723 bases in 850 attempts, an incredible 85.1 percent success rate. He averaged 60 steals per season from 1981-92 -- his lowest stolen base total during that stretch was 41 in 1985, one of only three times he dipped under 50 -- and his 583 steals during the 1980s ranked second to Henderson (838). During his offensive peak from 1981-87, Raines hit .310/.396/.448 (135 OPS+) with an average of 172 hits, 31 doubles, nine triples, nine home runs, 72 stolen bases, 79 walks and 61 strikeouts per season. He was an All-Star all seven years and received MVP votes in six of the seven seasons as well, topping out at fifth place in the voting in 1983. Raines racked up 38.4 WAR from 1981-87, the fifth most in MLB behind four Hall of Famers: Henderson (47.1), Mike Schmidt (46.1), Wade Boggs (43.3) and Gary Carter (83.4). Guest
Let me ask a hypothetical....dial back the years and put them both in the draft and who do GM"s take...Raines or Biggio? It's not even close.
Guest
Piazza before Raines? Lol. Too much creedence is in the "numbers" Worsley.
jtworsley
Where did I say Piazza should be in over him? Piazza was shitty defensively and his numbers at any other position wouldn't hold the water. And that's great that he could have averaged those numbers through 162 games, but you're forgetting that he didn't play 162 games and those rates never stay that high. I find it curious that you want to use that stat, but you don't mention how he never hit triple digits in SB (something Henderson did 3 times, including 130, you know, the number Raines could've gotten. And I am not sure why you're giving me flack for pointing out his career number when all you just did was the same thing. RBI may be a no. 3 hitter stat, but runs scored aren't. Raines was also never a real MVP candidate (Best finish was fifth, big whoop) The four guys above him in WAR all have at least 1 WS between 1980-1990 except Boggs,Schmidt and Henderson both have at least 1 MVP, Boggs highest finish was 4th, which isn't impressive, but better than 5th and Carter finished second and third in his career And cool, GMs preferred Raines over Biggio when they were rookies, NFL GMs preferred Michael Vick over Drew Brees too, and we all saw how that works out. I didn't say you said Piazza was more worthy. You linked a s/s showing the writer's putting Piazza ahead of Raines which what I was referring to. 2. He had 71 stolen bases in 88 games. Not sure how you think he wasn;t going to hit 100 needing 29 over a half season and not sure how you're so damn sure he wouldn;t have tasken a run at Brock;'s record. He never ran with the reckless abandon he did as a rookie again. He talked about how he couldn;t do that again and stay healthy. His SB% and his OBP% pretty much shows he could have stolen as many as he wanted to. 3. You're very sensitive. In any case he was a better ballplayer than Biggio and Piazza and a whole bunch of other guys that are in.

Piazza isn't in and he may have been better for 5 years, but doesn't have the lengthy career that you need in order to be a Hall of Famer. Not sure why you're calling me sensitive, but whatever
