Consider how Rockefeller funded hospitals, Cuban's prescription drug discount machine, etc. Although I do not believe altruism actually exists (in people), people can use the currency of joy to drive their motives, which is great -- even if it's not true altruism. Some do so well that their money creates itself, but at some point in history or your family’s history, someone used delayed gratification to earn, they traded pleasure for monetary gain or took risks with their time. We have dudes going to space. While not relatively unlike the age of sail, we also have people who have treasure chests larger than nations and the power to influence so much more than a daily paper or trade route to India. Companies are massive and have 1st A rights. These conglomerates are controlled by a few who all went to boarding school with each other.
