Popular Post chef
12 hours ago, Mercalius said: I feel like it diminishes most of the current administration’s failures and excuses them on things that are largely self inflicted. I respect chef, but wholeheartedly disagree with his take, and I could go on a tangent about the ramifications of shutting down the Keystone Pipeline in favor of the Nord Stream Pipeline, while simultaneously undoing most of the significant border policy allowing 5-6x of illegal immigration under the previous administration (complete with taxpayer benefits) that directly impacts American wages and housing costs, while also noting that allowing the re-funding to Iran and over-spending in Ukraine is directly tied to not only our suffering economy but also directly responsible for the instability in our international relations. But I don’t have to get into all of that. Everyone here is partisan to varying degrees. What isn’t partisan is knowing, without question, your grocery bill is substantially higher than it was just a few years ago. I don’t even think the most liberal person here would argue that. Gas was roughly $1.80 a gallon a few years ago. I filled up tonight at $3.29 a gallon. Electricity has gone from 13.5 cents per kWh to over 16 since 2020. On average that’s about a 30% increase on the utility bill. One bedroom rentals in my small town were 3/5s of what they currently cost. Lord knows what they cost in metropolitan areas. Kids can’t get a fair start in life at the moment. 18 year olds and college graduates have to live with mom and dad because the cost of living isn’t fathomable for people making under 40k a year. That’s roughly a teacher’s salary, with a Master’s Degree where I’m from. Anything less than that, good luck I guess with mom and dad. And mom and dad are struggling too. Vacations, luxury purchases, savings accounts for the kids, investing? Not the options they used to be. These things are affecting people, tens of millions of people, and the rise in costs of everything matters to them. And the policy passed/imposed/removed since 2020 has directly affected all of this. The only thing that was a positive, generally speaking, for the last few years was the stock market. Which finally caught up to reality and lost ~6 trillion dollars in just a few weeks. And it wasn’t just shenanigans with people playing around with interest rates on Yen. I love Japan, but be real. Our economy, inflation, and economic struggles played a very large role in it. And yes, Trump did predict a market collapse under Biden/Harris. And we just witnessed one. A year or so late or the predictive market were she to become President? That’s to be seen. But he did call it. Not sure why that’s framed as him whiffing. We can forgive away a President’s role in this or that, and to an extent it is true. But when a snowball is rolling downhill - it gets bigger. And at some point, it’s going to smash into something. We are that something. The simple fact you're talking gas prices and the recent "market crash"* shows nothing but regurgitation of right wing talking points and is missing the whole concept that the Exec branch not affect everything to nearly the extent attributed. Yes there are very real issues of affordability for everyday Americans all around. But conflating that with my team will make it all good their team all bad... well the phrase oversimplification isn't strong enough a word. I've got an employee - one of those for whom I think Fox News became too left wing for him - who was ranting about lower oil production/higher gas because of Biden... well I usually say nothing but did mention You do know we have been the leading producer in the world for years and it's only increased under Biden? He informed me I should check my info because obviously I am being deceived by MSM sources. Misattributed economics and blatantly ignored facts might work well and sound good within an echo chamber, but if you're honestly trying to participate in an adult conversation you've got to start with some factual realities. (* I've been expecting a serious pullback for a while now. Very likely still on the table. But to blame it on Biden/Harris would be like blaming an NFL head coach for winning 3 SB in a row then when they get eliminated in the conference championship the team "crashed" due to their failure of leadership.) Titans279
Gas prices in particular are annoying to complain about because prices were so cheap in 2020 and started going up in 2021 for a pretty obvious reason (COVID, end of COVID). Gas prices during 2014-2016 were not much different than they were in the 2017 to early 2020 years of Trump... Trump didn't really make the prices come down from the last two years of Obama. Check the chart! https://www.eia.gov/dnav/pet/hist/LeafHandler.ashx?n=pet&s=emm_epm0_pte_nus_dpg&f=m Things got more expensive as the vaccines got delivered and people started doing stuff again. Passenger volumes on flights started ticking back up in 2021 too. Supply chains were ravaged and people started doing things again (and had a ton of spare cash due to the cash governments injected). Prices understandably went up as demand rose and people were willing to pay it. https://www.tsa.gov/travel/passenger-volumes Edited August 14, 2024 by Titans279 MadMax

Never mind the fact that he is a scumbag who is a grifter. I mean any reasonable person who even reads or listens to him speak and his actual answers should come away with this guy is a fucking moron who can’t be trusted with any public office. His followers have been conditioned to blindly accept whatever comes out of his mouth as unassailable gospel, never to be questioned or verified for accuracy. They WANT to be lied to. They WANT to believe the fairy tales of a world full of terrible dragons and big bad wolves that are out to get them and destroy America….and they’ve convinced themselves Trump is their golden knight in shining armor with his promises to vanquish their would-be foes, save the village, and spread wealth, peace, and tranquility throughout the kingdom. They see what they want to see…while willfully overlooking, ignoring, and discrediting the reality of who Trump actually is because it doesn’t align with their fantasy. Around Jan 2009 right before he left office some middle east scuttlebutt caused them to go way down for just a couple of weeks while Bush was technically in office. Anyway whenever right wingers did a comparison they'd use those figures "Gas was a $1.50 before Bush left!". rns90, and MadMax
