The special counsel’s office can access more than 1,600 communications found on Rep. Scott Perry’s cell phone, including some about his interest in assisting former President Donald Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election, according to a new court decision on Tuesday.

 

The development comes months after special counsel Jack Smith’s office indicted Trump for leading a conspiracy to obstruct the vote, and following a protracted, often-secretive, court battle over which of Perry’s cell phone messages could be accessible to investigators.

 

The court decision releases the bulk of Perry’s messages to investigators after months of delays because of legal appeals around investigative access to congressional records, which provide special constitutional protections for the work of members of Congress.

 
Yet, Chief Judge James Boasberg of the DC District Court is allowing Perry to still protect about 400 records relating directly to votes he would take, including certifying the 2020 election result under the Electoral Count Act.

The decision is a blow to Smith’s hopes to keep Trump’s March 4, 2024 trial on track. He argued in his petition to the court that the speedy resolution of Trump’s claim of presidential immunity is of urgent national interest.

 

The court gave no explanation for declining to weigh in now. None of the justices recorded any dissent from the decision.

The issue will now be decided by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, which has signaled it will act quickly to decide the case. Special counsel Jack Smith had cautioned that even a rapid appellate decision might not get to the Supreme Court in time for review and final word before the court’s traditional summer break.

She's right that putting Trump in jail would likely divide the country even further, but that's not good enough. Trump tore at the very foundations of our country and the system for his personal gain. He destroyed faith in our system of government, our elections, gave away secrets, denigraded our friends, and legitimized many of our enemies. He was a step away from a mob boss in the white house. He was every bit as responsible for Jan 6th as many of the people who actually went to jail for it. if Joe Schmoe deserves to go to jail for their crimes, then Trump should pay for his. 

 

None of these people deserve to be president. It's depressing listening to these idiots speak.

The strategy should be to get Never Trumpers, independents and Dems to vote for them in the primaries.

Well her only hope was ever if Trump was removed from the ballot. So it makes sense to pander to his cultists because she would need their votes to win over one of the other 2nd string contenders like DeSantis.

Has any case against Trump been decided?  It's unspeakable to imagine a person of his character being accepted as a president for life.  I can't remember any time in our country's history when that idea would even be considered acceptable.  

 

We are in a bad spot, the country needs a powerful leader today because of the lack of stability in the world.  The border has to be given proper attention.  Our resources aren't limited, but the amount they ration out to us is.  You can't have a bottomless wage base.

 

MAGA is just out there.  He knows and his son knows that a man used to be able to get a job, earn decent and have a modest estate, 3BR home, pickup and a family car.  HS Dropout.  His son finished HS, got him a little home and a pickup too.

 

Today, those jobs no longer exist.  The ones that still exist have lots of cheap labor from immigrants, especially in the right to work states.  The bottom of the labor pool has changed.  The white and newly included blacks have been/are pushed out by immigrants who don't have the overhead they do.  They work harder, cheaper.

 

Meanwhile, many newer jobs have educational requirement$ that just don't fit all Americans.  The Republicans are now in favor of busing.  Texas alone has sent 50,000 people to cities whose politics favor immigrants coming to America, the right way.  These immigrants are coming to NYC 'the right way'.

 

Americans elect presidents who they think will make their lives the best.  High interest rates.  Livable wages vanishing.  Cost of living going up.  Big City Crime up.  I think those are bread and butter issues that the dems have to present a plan to deal with vs the empty promises of jobs, rebuilt factories, new Cadillac health insurance plan and a WALL that Trump offers!  

 

This is America first!!  Do you want to elect a president for life?  Are you willing to go door to door to explain to MAGA why that is a bad idea?  Call cousin Earl and say, "Brother, we gotta talk."  Do you have a plan that Biden has presented you can explain is a better alternative to deal with the stream of refugees that is only getting larger?

 

The zealot is ever ready.  He will join a resurrection and bust into the United States Capitol.  He will bring a rope and ask Mike Pence to come hang on it.  Now, the zealots are saying elect a dictator or it is time for a civil war.
