No shit. Every NFL RB is “good”. Are they exceptional though? Nah. Is he a top 15 back in this league? Nah.

And he doesn’t have any ACL.

At best you might get one contract out of him.

We already have a top 5 RB. I’d rather have gone WR at 3rd even if we reached.

He is exceptional at one cut and go. He is a good pass blocker and he runs really good routes for a RB. He's a playmaker.

What I would have done differently doesn't matter. Getting a second contract for a RB doesn't matter.

Vrabel was tired of soft tissue injuries so now we got a dude whose bones are rubbing on each other. Hard tissue injuries >>>

Well... at least we won't have to worry about him tearing the ACL.

I didn't say there would be huge changes. I said you are hounding on the pick and that he won't get used while simultaneously noting our FA pickups (and Skoronski) are pass blockers. I would think some changes are coming, and I fully expect Spears to play a lot of snaps this year.

Who we drafted doesn't necessarily signal an impending philosophical change. We haven't ever thrown the ball to RBs at a significant clip. We paid Dion Lewis, barely threw to him. We drafted Evans and even the few times he was healthy, we barely threw to him. We had Hilliard, who everyone loved for two season, we barely threw to him. How is it unreasonable to expect a VERY strong trend to continue. I get why people THINK we're going to use Spears in all of these dynamic ways. What I'm saying is I'll believe it when I see it and the team has given me years of evidence that this is the correct way to view the situation.

New GM. That's my hope. Analytics becoming heavily involved in the draft is a good sign, but you're right it doesn't mean much on the field. I am hoping Carthon can get it through Vrabel's head that he has to change. If he doesn't they'll both be fired before the new stadium.

Spears isn't like Hillard. And if you remember they used Lewis quite a bit before Henry broke out and Lewis was making 3 yard receptions while juking 4 guys because his legs were completely shot.

To take it further on Hillard, he scored a couple of td's early on td catches and they barely threw to him afterwards.  On an offensively challenged team no less.  Yeah, the cynical route is the correct one here.  Prove it. You can say whatever you want but when you play equal (or better teams) and revert to the same tired game plan/philosophy, it's hard for me  to believe them when they say they will use Spears as a pass catcher etc..

Isn't this condition basically what forced Todd Gurley into forced retirement? it's still so hard to get sense out of this pick.

I mean...Gurley had an excellent 6 year stretch. With Carthon's past with SF I highly doubt we are ever re-signing any RBs unless it's to a small deal, so if he can make it through his rookie contract as a contributor then it isn't a bad pick.

Would Gurley have started his career in this state though? if so, happy days. But I assumed it was later on when he got to this same point Spears is at.

Good point. Hopefully he makes it for 4 years, because that's all we need.

It's been years but I don't think Gurley's knees were this bad. And who knows with injuries.  Darryton Evans kept on getting injured here and he was basically clean (injury wise) when we drafted him.

This is really dated, but Terry Allen tore his ACL in both knees and was able to have a decent career in the NFL as a RB.  Spears condition may or may not be worse.

BTW Evans got cut today by Indy

Can't stay on a team. Bears signed him and then cut him before that.

Bad apple.

He did play for the Bears late in the year but yeah what a bust.

I would hardly call gurly's career 6 excellent years. More 3 good years in his first 4 and two just hanging around
