There’s a weird pile of rocks over a tarp in my yard

The tarp covered a bunch of sand.  I dug until I started to hit some wood chips.  Rain is coming, so I covered it back and will resume later.

After digging about two feet deep, I hit wood chips which were either rotting roots or the remains of a poorly constructed cache.

 

My conclusion is either:

 

there was something that disintegrated with time.

 

there was nothing there, instead it was the cover for a small garden

 

there was nothing there, and the tarp with rocks was actually an abandoned sled for moving rocks around.  There’s a  rope on one end that could have served as a handle.

 

As it is, there was nothing for me in the ground except for a solid workout.  And another one later, when I fill the hole back in.
