Dynasties of Heartbreak - Football Outsiders

Titans/Oilers show up twice on this on-going series (only one more installment, but I doubt the Tannehill/Henry/Vrabel version of the team makes the list).

No, we're here because of Jack Pardee. Glanville's Oilers had run the run 'n' shoot, but Pardee's Oilers lived it. Under Pardee, Moon became the third player ever to throw for more than 4,000 yards in back-to-back seasons. He set new NFL records for attempts and completions as the Oilers shot up to the top 10 in offense—more volume than efficiency, but what volume! The four-wide sets gave stodgy 1980s defenses fits as the Oilers simply had more starting-caliber receivers than many teams had competent cornerbacks. Add in a defensive resurgence and you had the most consistently successful team in the NFL in this era—a league-high seven straight playoff appearances, the longest winning streak since the 1972 Dolphins, and so on and so forth.

Check out the article for the details of the '90, '91, '92, and '93 heartbreaks that lead to the '94 tear-down.

Jeff Fisher is the butt of a lot of jokes for his 7-9 bullshit, but he got the leeway for all of those mediocre seasons thanks to a real run of success in Tennessee. Fisher's first 7-9 and 8-8 teams were tremendous coaching jobs, taking over a Houston team that had been gutted by ownership and playing in front of hostile crowds angry that they were losing the team to Tennessee. They were playing in front of empty stadiums preempted on radio for Houston Rockets preseason games. Winning seven or eight games in the face of that bullshit is a cause for celebration, and a reminder that you don't get into a position to tie the record for losses as a head coach without some serious accolades in your pocket.

Click the second link to remind yourself of the heartbreak vs. the Rams, Ravens, Raiders, and Patriots.

Sigh.  I know it's been 30 years or so but reading that blurb on the 90s Oilers and their playoff disasters STILL hurts.

The 2003 Titans team when completely healthy was the best team in franchise history

I would like them now-along with the current Titans filling out the roster.

I have noticed how some posters don't realize how good the Titans have been/are.  The Titans were best team AFC last year.  Crybaby needs to be a Jaguars fan.  Jacksonville was Sacksonville.  They got within ticks of the SB.  Cleveland, player for player one of the top 5 rosters if not this year, last year for sure.  They have signed a new QB who is facing a suspension.  The Vikings-Got Coach-Got QB-Got RB-Got shut out since they got all that.  The Raiders got Chucky!  Too many people lack proper appreciation for our team.

Just remember the years before JR and Vab came, the game thread turned into Saturday Night Live by the second half.

That stretch of brutal years is why they are in Nashville now.

The playoff collapses and blow up of the team in 1994 didn't help but the real issue was Bud going to the well too often to get a better deal from the city and Astrodome or threatening to move.  Hence, when he did this in 1994, his equity in public support was minimal.  Add in that the mayor was fighting public money for new stadiums.

The irony is that Bud was right and the city ended up building 3 brand new stadiums to appease the Astros, Rockets, and getting the NFL back.

Totally but the city capitulates if the Oilers don't have that stretch of soul crushing losses. It's never sat well with me how city helped finance new stadiums for the Rockets, Astros, and Texans within a few years of the Oilers relocating.

Between the threats to move and him blowing up the roster in 1994, it was a classic case of horrid timing by Bud.  The city and fans simply didn't believe the Oilers would really move after threatening it two or three times before in the 80's.

The city made a last ditch effort to keep the team in Houston but by then the Oilers had signed the exclusive deal with Nashville.

Well Nashville certainly won because they'd have never obtained an NFL team without Bud Adams.  Of course, if they don't replace Hee Haw stadium, history will repeat itself.  The NFL is undefeated in these things.

But the real winners are the Adams family and the NFL.  The Oilers were not in the top 15 in values (#15 Minnesota was valued at 167 M in 1996) and the least valuable team in 1995 were the Colts at 134 so the Titans were somewhere in the 140 M - 165 M range back then,  Now they are worth 2.625 B.......
