Aside from the fact that Obama was president for twice as long as Trump, he had to dig America out from the greatest economic mess since the Great Depression. And that meant lower tax revenue, especially following the disastrous Bush tax cuts. So yeah, there was plenty of debt under Obama. But what did Trump and the GOP do as soon as they could? Pass even more tax cuts for the rich that cost America revenue and jacked up the debt even higher! And all this despite Obama handing off a strong economy that didn’t need any stimulus. There is no other way to go if you want to cut the federal debt. Also just eliminate the debt ceiling entirely so they can't keep using it as a political threat.
