Trump and the GOP already spent the money, genius. The debt ceiling is about paying for the trillions in debt they already racked up…

News flash:   low-rated channels aren't profitable to providers, period.

In most cases, smaller less-watched channels have either worked out contracts or are owned outright by the parent companies of popular channels.   And when dealing with cable providers, these parent companies have it written into the provider contracts that the channels go hand-in-hand:  if the provider carries the popular channel A in their lineup, they must also agree to carry (and pay for) less-watched channels B, C, and D.

DirecTV's refusal to pay carriage fees to Newsmax clearly indicates they didn't feel the channel was profitable....and it appears Newsmax has no partnerships with any larger corporations to help keep them on the air and ensure their revenue stream.

Perhaps this lack of corporate partnership was a conscious decision by Newsmax ownership ....or perhaps the established and respected media corporations refused to have their brand tied to an independent news channel that is primarily known for pushing extreme far-right rhetoric with stories and viewpoints that are misleading, unsupported by factual data, and/or demonstrably false.

There’s also the fact that Newsmax makes their live programming available for free via their website .   Which is their decision as the content owners…but now they’re demanding that providers pay for the same product Newsmax readily gives away for free.   Explain how that makes business sense for the providers?

Of course, conservatives are obviously playing the censorship card and painting Newsmax as a victim of political prejudice....but the fact is, Newsmax made this bed for themselves, and it was years in the making.    They could either be an independent far-right political news channel with full control over their own content....or they could reap the financial rewards of partnering with a bigger mainstream media by  compromising on their more extreme content.

But they can't have it both ways.   They made a conscious choice to remain independent and maintain full control....and these are the consequences of that decision.

That damn near sounds like Capitalism. I guess some of the right are less interested in that these days...

I’m guessing Newsmax thought it was time to cash in on their grift. They’ve been playing to the radical right and figured they have them in their pocket to apply public/ political pressure, if DirecTV balked. I’m also guessing the management of DirecTV spent extra time , extra handling to ensure they’d withstand legal and political challenges — including backfilling their programming with similar conjecture news.  Newsmax just overplayed their hand.

How so?   Congress is going to have hearings on this.    Backfilling with a lower rated cheaper conservative station, while keeping a bunch of low rated left leaning stations that charge fees does not fly.

You don't know all the facts regarding how they fill out their programming and neither do I -- including considerations and constraints that may not be readily transparent, but not necessarily nefarious.  What's known is that Newsmax wasn't indiscriminately targeted.  DirecTV said no to their demands for a rate increase.

"Congress is going to have hearings" - ROFL, yes the gop-led House needs to deliver on the aggrievances.  My bias aside, these gop hearings are pretty shammy: Do you denounce Pol Pot?! *smirk*, asking the Comptroller of the US about "5bil in 1 elementary school for CRT" *wrong on every level*.  let's see if there's any there "there" regarding legitimate de-platforming. And by legitimate it should be allowed for an earnest risk assessment of carrying a faux "news" television program that leans heavily into emotionally conveyed  blatant misinformation.  Unless I am wrong That's a significant liability exposure for a lawsuit in the US.

Seeing that dummy Taylor Greene say that shit was hilarious and sad at the same time. The look on the guy's face was priceless. He knew he'd crossed the Rubicon and found himself square in the Twighlight Zone.

The MTG question about 16k to some rando place for drag queen story time.... the USA comptroller, overseeing spending on a level that's honestly difficult to fathom, and MTG is wasting this person's time about 16k on her pet peeve?!  If the value of his role were quantified in $$/hr vs value-add activities in REAL oversight, it's just as likely he 'wasted' more than 16k just attending the hearing so MTG can get her grifty soundbite replayed on the right wing networks.

Anyone see Russell Brand on Bill Mahar? That dude has went full on right wing conspiracy nut...... But he's even more sinister. He does it in a Tulsi Gabbard manner, throw out popular broad statements like get money out of politics etc.... while sucking up to Putin and Trump.

They spoke about Murdock admitting the Fox hosts knowingly lied about the election and Brand started saying all media was liars and corrupt, specifically MSNBC.

I’m not sure why anyone would care what Russell Brand has to say about anything, but the guy clearly has been grasping at relevance for years. He just found himself an audience from the Covid denier community.
