Falcons Decline 5th Yr Option for TE Hayden Hurst

The 5th year option is great for retaining first-round picks who end up becoming top 5-10 players at their respective positions.

 

But we're seeing more and more teams declining the option for players who are good starting-caliber players, but aren't necessarily worth a top 10 salary.

 

It all comes down to the GM deciding which players are worth paying and which guys can be replaced.

No that's not it.  Per the 2020 CBA, 5th year options fully guarantee the 4th and 5th year contracts for players.  Before, it was only an injury guarantee for the 5th year until the NFL league year.

It’s expensive. Think of it like a special 1-time franchise tag.

Not this yr.  Almost every first rounder was tendered.
