Why do people want minimum wage increased?

Recommended Posts

Imo that would be stupid and pointless and one of the worse things for this nation financially. I honestly wonder why people don't look at the long run. First of all some of these smaller companies wouldn't be able to afford and mandated minimum wage increase. Then people think prices will stay the same? There will be an increase in price on goods and cost of living. And while I commend anybody who works an honest 9-5 no matter the capacity...A Job at a fast food joint or convenient store should be mostly for High school kids and young adults imo. If you wanna make more money then take the proper steps to make more money. It's not like you don't have the freedom to do so. Not making enough is a nice incentive for people to be compelled to do better in life. Not be content with working a job at McDonald's or Dollar General...Although they are respectable jobs.

People who aren't born on 3rd base, who are slow/dumb, too disabled for other more labor-intensive jobs, are older/retired but still have a need for more income, have bad luck, have low motivation, et

Alright then. I will take you seriously and give you the answers here. You mention differing opinions in another post, but the problem is not a lack of respect for a differing idea--it is that your id

Lolol why is this always the typical responses from Liberal/Democrats. It's never nothing intelligent or practical...It's always personal attacks and non sense. It's never nothing straight from your minds or even anything debatable. Cancel culture personalitys LOL. When Liberals/Democrats hear the truth first thing they wanna do is discredit and talk down on you. They never have actual intelligent thoughtful responses. Typical of people with lower I.Qs.

Lolol I love these back and fourths. Seeing the responses from the people on this board strengthens my stance against Liberals & Democrats. I always wondered why so many white conservatives refer to y'all as un American and socialists and Communists haha. Y'all don't believe in differing opinions or even freedom of speech.

Bc you obviously don't understand what you're talking about and it'd be a useless exercise to try and explain it to you.

We already have a well debated thread on this exact topic (which I linked to), dumbass...

Alright then. I will take you seriously and give you the answers here. You mention differing opinions in another post, but the problem is not a lack of respect for a differing idea--it is that your ideas are critically bad,  built on misinformation and a lack of a basic understanding. I don't mean this as a knock on you, it is just that factually what you are doing is (as others have pointed out) putting out low quality generalizations that aren't really based on the reality of the situation.

Let's begin dismantling this piece by piece.

Imo that would be stupid and pointless---if you can't understand the point or position of the other side you can't really participate in a debate, just food for thought.

and one of the worse things for this nation financially.

What do you mean by nation? we already know that the nation is carrying the burden for a lack of wages by providing government support and financial assistance to low income individuals. Really, you are connecting some vague notion of business interest to the health of the whole nation. This is a uniquely Republican trick, and if you want to support the needs of businesses and especially the wealthiest people in the nation, that's your prerogative, just call it like it is.

Then people think prices will stay the same? There will be an increase in price on goods and cost of living.

This is the WHOLE POINT of raising the minimum wage. Prices are rising. The cost of living is dramatically going up. The minimum wage is not. The consequence you are concerned about is already happening, just to fuel record profits. The same argument you are making now is the same kind of argument we've heard throughout American history ANYTIME any progress is made. Your same points were used to argue in favor of child labor, for example.

And while I commend anybody who works an honest 9-5 no matter the capacity...A Job at a fast food joint or convenient store should be mostly for High school kids and young adults imo.

And yet this isn't the reality of the workforce that is on minimum wage. An opinion of how the world should be is always nice and fine, but the reality is many Americans who are not highschoolers work in low wage jobs and fastfood is not the only industry playing minimum wage. While minimum wage workers do tend to be younger, this is not some kind of overwhelming majority. Further, a low minimum wage forces workers to continually play catch up. It might take an hourly worker several promotions to make what would be considered a liveable wage factoring in cost of living in many areas. What does one's starting salary mean towards overall potential? Worth considering. Also, one could question "liveable" versus "quality of life".

If you wanna make more money then take the proper steps to make more money. It's not like you don't have the freedom to do so. Not making enough is a nice incentive for people to be compelled to do better in life. Not be content with working a job at McDonald's or Dollar General...Although they are respectable jobs.

Ah, and now we have arrived at your grand conclusion--with thinking like this we can dismiss any problem in society and live with perpetually broken systems.

You say that these are respectable jobs, but you want the people that have them to have to live dramatically under the cost of living, often relying on government system and being a missed paycheck or medical emergency away from experiencing homelessness.

You think people should simply manifest "doing better" without acknowledging the game is rigged against them.

And what's on the other end of your argument? That businesses would disappear?

Increasing the minimum wage empowers more regular people to participate in the economy. We can take away burdens on smaller and middle class businesses without basically subsidizing record profits for the wealthiest people in this country.

I encourage you to research this and come up with an informed opinion. A lot of conservatives these days seem really resistant to this process.

But I promise you, no one is trying to cancel you for dismissing badly formed ideas.

Holy crap, you don't have a clue how economics work. Read a book.

I assume this is the book you're referring to following the countless successes and no failures of this economic and business genius

It's so funny how that man lives rent free in your head.

Ah yes, me making fun of you idolizing a conman and you actually believing him (possibly even donating to this supposed economic genius) shows how obsessed I am with him. Well, looks like you really got me there 😟
