titanfan24
Looking around the league, it seems like you just have to embrace what you are and then try to fill in the gaps via the draft and free agency. I'm reminded of the Colts back in the Manning years. They just doubled down on their offense and plugged and played on defense with the exception of Freeney and Mathis. We are an offensive team in an offensive league. No need to make yourself worse on offense to try and chase an unknown "better day" on D. Sign those guys and just go heavy on defense in the draft. Maybe take a slot WR or OL in Round 3, otherwise just draft all defense and throw numbers at it. DCTitan, and pat

ctm
I expect both players to reach free agency based on JRob's statement that they earned it. A lot will depend on what other offers they get. I'd add that Vrabel said they need to improve offensively against the league's better defenses. What offensive positions can they upgrade? The WR #3 and RT seem like the most likely spots. But if either Davis or Smith leave, then they have to be replaced just to get back somewhere near the status quo. Then they would be in a position to upgrade. Keep both Davis and Smith might be doable assuming the contracts are reasonable but it would almost certainly limit their other free agency options unless JRob is very aggressive with restructures/cuts. And that is the proverbial yearly issue in theNFL. We need a RT, edge rusher, CB. But if we get rid of wr, te, ilb we have to replace those too. It is hard to get better if we draft as shitty as last year... Justafan
scine09
The more I think about it the more I think they should keep both guys if at all possible for continuity from last year and draft all defensive players to help the defense while hopefully keeping Jayon Brown. They need to get faster on defense which can happen by drafting the right guys. Although I don't think they will be able to afford Davis. Edited February 21, 2021 by japan

The guy fits the offense to a T and still has upside. When him and Brown are in the field we have a top 3 duo. Mythos27, and NashvilleNinja

I agree with this and I actually like Jonnu Smith a lot. He's a really good player, but he's in a vertical offense that doesn't rely on its tight ends like that. It's just not money well spent. Keeping all 3 of Davis, Smith and Brown is a tall order without restructuring a lot of guys and pushing salary cap dollars forward. In addition, the team needs help on the OL both on the interior and at OT (unless you think Kelly is the long term answer). And Vrabel said he wants to improve the offense to compete against better defenses. Where is that help coming from?

Maybe they try to sign or draft a TE who can run better run more reliable routes than Smith at a lower cost. This is under the assumption that FIrkerser and Swaim return. I suppose they could draft a burner WR but JR says he doesn't really care that much about speed. So who knows about that part.

I do think we'll see a few restructures by I also think it won't be at the massive level suggested by some people. I think you are putting too much into that comment - which was a pretty obvious observation - the offense did not roll over the top 5 defenses as constructed. He could have been referring to the play calling as much as the personnel. Perhaps having to scheme around Lewan's absence too -it clearly impacted Jonnu's production. There's going to be changes in the personnel - there always is. Also, the market is kind of unknown right now. Davis and Smith are valuable for sure but they get could huge offers considering the upside. And in Davis' case, the down the road impact to AJ Brown is perhaps a precedent Robinson would be hesitant to make.

I think Robinson's speed comment is probably directed at the all speed and at the expense of bad hands, poor routes, and no size/blocking ability. He's not drafting a 4.2 track guy......That doesn't work in how he has built the team where they value all around ability, including run blocking. And honestly, with Henry still the focus of the offense it doesn't make much financial sense to have two WR with huge salaries when you don't throw the ball that much.
