If Schumer gives that up he should be voted out of the leadership asap.

There’s no reason to believe Schumer has the votes to kill the filibuster anyway. Not if Manchin holds to his guns.

Maybe they should reform the filibuster, rather than a full elimination, in a way to limit its usage. It has been reformed before.

The votes are there sans machin and if the GOP continues to obstruct the pressure on machine will be incredible.

Holy shit that’s a crazy article. Pompeo actually tweeted the US isn’t about multiculturalism? Crazy.

Yeah, he basically declared himself a White Nationalist (my take on it, reading between the lines) and is implying that anyone who doesn't have caucasian European heritage and cultural affiliation isn't American.

Pompeo is probably the worst of the Trump henchmen.

Pompeo has a lot of competition in that contest...

It appears Biden is going to go the same route Trump went on his unilateral CDC eviction moratorium. This is a terrible decision.

The intent is well meaning enough, but the execution is fucking terrible. A blanket ban on all evictions regardless of the reason, as this is for all intents and purposes, does not serve either side’s best interests (landlord or tenant).

There are real people suffering from the pandemic and at risk of losing housing. How about we help those folks directly by paying their rent instead of what we’re currently doing.  I’m personally aware of no less than 4 separate households who have decided they just weren’t going to pay rent for the past 4 months because there is nothing the landlord can do about it. Meanwhile the landlords who don’t have federally backed mortgages( the vast majority by the way) aren’t eligible for any sort of Loan deference or forbearance.  And don’t even think of asking the local municipalities  to defer property taxes.

Landlords aren’t asking you to feel sorry for them, they’re simply asking for common sense legislation that solves the problem rather than asking them to subsidize an entire segment of the population. Trump and Biden have either already failed or are about to fail miserably in delivering that. Biden says he is setting aside $35B in rent relief.

The problem is $35B in rent relief doesn’t do jack shit for the people that either: a) don’t qualify for assistance or b) are too lazy or are too prideful to request  it.

What would common sense legislation look like:

1) requiring general sessions courts to remain open to heart civil cases and putting the onus on the tenant to prove they were impacted. This will dramatically limit the  abuse of the current legislation. As it stands now, one only has to sign an affidavit Stating they’ve been impacted. No verification at all. Keep the courts open and let a judge make the determination if they’ve really been impacted. It should be easy enough to prove with paystubs, 1099s, bank statements, etc.

2) allow landlords to request assistance on the tenants behalf. Currently, if the tenant says fuck it I am not paying you can’t do shit. Well, they’re spot on there’s nothing that can be done. But if the landlords could apply on the tenants behalf at least they could be made whole for the limited number of people abusing the system. Could unscrupulous landlords  cheat that system too? Possibly, but i feel 100% more confident in a DA’s willingness to go after a landlord for perjury than I do about them prosecuting a poor person signing one of trumps self declaration forms. Plus with judges involved, at least there’s an independent third party reviewing every case. Currently Davidson County General sessions  courts have been closed since the CDC order went into effect months ago.

3) align the assistance income thresholds with the eviction moratorium income thresholds. Currently, Metro Action committee, the primary entity delivering CARES money in Nashville has an income threshold of $23k for single individuals, but the eviction moratorium covers any single individual making up to $99k. So if you make $50k you’re protected from eviction but you make to much to receive rental assistance from the Cares Relief block grants. How the fuck does that make any sense. If you’re prevented by federal decree from being evicted you should be eligible to receive  federal rental assistance.

If a humble CPA can come up these simple, common sense solutions, then imagine what a team of multi-family real estate experts and Fair housing advocate lawyers could draft up. There’s really no excuse for this level of incompetence. I know I’ll get roasted for questioning anything Biden does, but remember Trump was the first fucking idiot to try this and I roasted him for

it too.

Short term it needed to be done. Keeping tons of people from being evicted is paramount.

Let’s hope they can get a better long term plan passed through Congress.

I agree with his overall point, but this is exactly right. If millions of people were evicted in one fell swoop it would be chaos.

Trump and Congress failed to get a real plan passed for months, which is the real failure. I’m perfectly happy to blame Biden if they can’t get it done either, but he hasn’t been in office for even a full day yet. There is a mountain of shit on his plate that need to get done soon. They just can’t snap their fingers and get it done.

Oh for sure a Flood of evictions would be a nightmare scenario. I like the ban for people that need it. Nobody should be displaced because of a pandemic. I just wish they wouldn’t use a blanket ban and instead make it more targeted towards those that need it. Perhaps my initial post came across as too harsh on Biden, but I promise you the fact that Trump caused this mess in the first place by using the CDC isn’t lost on me. I guess I just hoped that, as progressive as the Biden agenda was,  they would already have their own plan on how to attack it instead of just extending trumps. He does deserve more time though.  The bar is pretty low to best the Don.
