Trump Wants to Pardon Himself

The gambit for Trump trying to pardon himself would be to then delay in the courts for 2-4 years and run again while using the pardon to shield himself from prosecution from federal crimes in the mean time.

Then he'd try to primary "disloyal" republicans in 2022 who could then practically shut down Congress for the next 2 years making sure nothing gets passed until he could run again. Then in 2024 getting even more loyalists in the government. And if all that happens, we're hosed.

As I've said before, we won a battle for our democracy but not the war.

This is why the 25th or impeachment/conviction would be ideal. It'd mean he couldn't run again iirc but neither seem likely atm.

For a while I thought it would be best for the Dem nominee to let Trump off the hook so we didn’t start a war or see a huge rise in sectarian violence. I changed my mind before yesterday, but yesterda

Strongly disagree.

Many thought they were witnessing the end of the Republican party as they knew it before Trump won the election. They thought the Tea Party and conservative extremists led to Trump's ridiculous bid, and that there was no way he'd really win. Obviously that was wrong, and we all saw that the party was willing to go to an extreme never before seen in modern US politics.

People will deny Trump in 4 years. The extremists will still vote against any Democrat (which equals socialist in their minds). Others will whitewash their complicity in Trump. Republicans will offer up another conservative candidate that is "Trump in policy, but not in character." They'll vote for whoever this person is because they still want low taxes, think deregulation will increase their stock portfolio, and they still fear the same stuff: immigrants, loss of white cultural dominance, gov help for anyone besides themselves, gays, and all other forms of general human progress.

They'll turn around and talk about how glad they are Trump is gone and how they never agreed with him. They'll speak proudly of how the party has changed for the better and how they're just and moral now. Nothing with them will change -- it's all rationalization.

These are people capable of ungodly mental gymnastics, and they boast memories worse than an 18-year-old lab suffering alzeihmer's.

I agree with a lot of what you say, but what happened in Georgia was a sign of the changing political  landscape. Trump's GOP has demonized LGBT rights, women's reproductive rights, disfranchised black voters, deported immigrant families seeking asylum, supported anti Muslim groups and white supremacists'.  The young voters and the minority voters are who swung the state.

There will always be hate groups that support racial discrimination and groups that claim to be anti government but are quick to take government handouts like Obamacare and stimulus checks. They'll always be GOP fiscal conservatives who hate social programs but give massive tax breaks to the rich and wealthy. But there's a growing voter base that they aren't embracing. The sheer numbers of registered voters are changing. GOP is not acknowledging them. If they don't adapt, its going to be bad news for the Republican party.

As I posted in another thread earlier today...

Article II, Section 2, Clause 1 of the United States Constitution, the President “shall have Power to grant Reprieves and Pardons for Offences against the United States, except in Cases of Impeachment.”

https://constitution.congress.gov/browse/essay/artII_S2_C1_3_1_1/

This wouldn’t prevent Trump from pardoning everyone else under the sun...but  hecannot pardon himself if impeached.

Melania must know she has to act soon or the money will be gone.

Been thinking about that.  How fast she might pull the trigger after he's out of office.  Will certainly be all about the calculus of more to gain by staying or going.

Whoops... seems like Trump has boxed himself into a little corner...

As ABC News previously reported, sources tell ABC News White House Counsel Pat Cipollone advised the president that he could face legal jeopardy for encouraging his supporters to storm the Capitol building, according to sources familiar with their discussions.

After these conversations, sources say the president grew angrier, and the entire pardon process has been described as "on hold" -- meaning others who have been lobbying the president for pardons, including his personal attorney Rudy Giuliani, may not receive one.

Trump has long believed he has the power to pardon himself. In 2018, the president tweeted he had the "absolute right." Although there is some ambiguity in the law, most constitutional lawyers and experts ABC News has spoken to say a president cannot pardon him or herself, based on the founding legal principle that no person can be a judge or jury in their own case.

Let’s hope that holds and he just stops giving out pardons.

But the reality of the situation is he will still pardon his kids and his favorite sycophants. And I still think he will try to self-pardon simply because he is in deep shit if he doesn’t.
