PFT: Buzz Growing Watson Could Demand Trade

The Texans are in such a mess that they might be better off trading Watson for a shitload of draft picks and going into full rebuild mode. With him surrounded by a poor roster they are a middling team. Not bad enough to get a top pick but not good enough to contend.

You just hate to see all this dysfunction at the Texans and Jags.

The biggest takeaway is that Cal McNair is in fact Tommy Boy.....He's allowed some Jesus Freak manipulator to take over and run everything.  It will come out that McNair and Easterby are probably into

Can only hope they don't trade him and he actually sits out and then they are forced to accept less than they could of got if they traded him before the draft.

The NFL is nothing like the NBA and just nature of positional value and contracts, the teams able to accommodate draft compensation to acquire him are pretty damn small.

Yeah thats why I explicitly detailed that star QBs (and star QBs only) are able to command that type of clout. For them the rules are different and the best comparison for star QBs is the NBA. We're not far from star QBs commanding fully guaranteed contracts.

The contract seems workable as a trade option. The Texans could use some draft picks and are clearly going to need a rebuild. It makes complete sense Watson would consider the option. It doesn't mean the Texans will oblige but this could definitely happen.

Maybe the Lions try to package Stafford. Falcons could move on from Ryan. Panthers could be a player.

Gotta remember, he's got to want to go there so teams like Lions and Jets are probably out due to their long standing cultures.

If I’m Washington I’m trading Chase Young and 2-3 number ones for him.  With the state of the QBs in that division they can become an automatic division winner just by Watson being on the field.  And you know the Texans would want to stick it to the Cowboys at the same time.

He doesn't really have much of a say. He's under contract until 2025 which any trade would give the destination team.

It wasn't covered in the PFT piece,  it according to OverTheCap, trading him pre June would net the Texans negative 5.6M in cap space for next season, which is looking like the worst year to do such a thing. So it would have to indicate a full blown rebuild. If it happens in 2022 it starts saving them cap space.

Washington aint trading Chase Young.

Miami is the odds on favorite, imo, if he truly wants out. Desirable city, Chris Grier has emerged as a great GM, Brian Flores appears to be an excellent head coach (not to mention both are black men which will mean a lot to Watson). And they have the assets to trade without hurting the team.

Again-- Tua, #18, 2RP, 3 future 1sts for Watson

He has a no trade clause.. he can veto any trade.. and I think he had that added in specifically for the reason that is potentially developing now.

The problem with the Texans is that they're in a full rebuild mode with no draft picks or cap space to rebuild with. So if this was a "wasted year" for Watson, then next year and probably at least the year after that will also be wasted years.

I also think for a new GM/coach... if their star QB truly wants out and they can't have the luxury of having a guy like Watson then getting a shit ton of 1st round picks to restock the cupboard (and possibly a young stud QB if they were able to get Tua) is a great consolation prize to kick-start a rebuild

As a Titans fan do you want Watson traded?  I think he right now is one of the 3 best QBs in football.  However, we all know that Watson would get a gigantic return.  And it could help the Texans restock.  Right now, with Watson, they are a lousy team.  And they have no first or second round picks and I’m pretty sure a bad cap situation.  So it’s going to take at least two years for the Texans to become a legit playoff contender again.  That’s another full year to waste Watson’s talents.  And who knows what happens between now and then with Watson.  So the question is would you rather have at least a year or two of Watson on a terrible team even if it’s within the division or the Texans to trade him, tank this year but then possibly own the two drafts afterwards.

Oh right. Weird it wasn't mentioned in the PFT article.
