Is the common cold a pandemic? Is the flu a pandemic?

Think about it.

Labeling something a pandemic brings along with it all sorts of baggage.  Everyone runs away and freaks out at all costs.

Cholera was a pandemic.  So was small pox.  So the mind set is that therefore, anything labeled a pandemic is catastrophic and deadly.

Regardless of the actual mortality rate.

The world has gone crazy.

I will ask again.  Is the common cold a pandemic?  Is the flu a pandemic?

No, because the keyword is common as in the common cold.  Enough people have immunity to the common cold that there is less risk.

In a pandemic, there is a completely new virus.  Because there is no herd immunity, it can spread quickly.  And also, without any immunity, healthy people are at risk of severe health complications.

5% death rate is incredibly high.  Exponential spread gets out of control very quickly.

There is reason why every government that has tried to ignore COVID eventually goes heavy on the response.  It's inescapable.  Semantic games don't change your vulnerability to the virus.

Now all that said, there is probably a way to safely live with the virus.  Figuring those details out is the job of the CDC.  They were trying to provide detailed guidance prior to being muzzled for political reasons.

The economy won't recover until the virus is being successfully managed.  Period.

The common cold is so widespread, the only thing keeping it from being declared a pandemic is the mortality rate.

In 2009, H1N1 was a type of flu (influenza) that was declared to be a pandemic.  Did everyone freak out? No.

In 1968, there was a pandemic that was caused by an influenza A (H3N2) virus.  Again, the flu.  Did everyone freak out? No.

And where the fuck does this 5% death rate number come from?  132K deaths is 5% of 330 million?  Uhhhh, no.

Denali... dude... are you just trolling?

You cant be this stupid.... I've argued and sided with you before but is this intentional ignorance or just trolling?

5% death rate comes from the number of people infected that die.... out of 100 people who actually catch it, 5 will die. Not 5% of America IMMEDIATELY dead as soon as the virus gets named. Use your brain.

2009/1968 neither had the death rate or total death amounts... or hospitalizations.

In fact.. H1N1 - that we know of after many years of study - infected about 5x as many people as Corona... but it killed about 1/45th as many people. We didnt LOCK HALF THE GODDAM WORLD DOWN for 4 months for that like we did with  Corona which is STILL GROWING.

Quit being retarded. Use Google. Learn something. Or try to quit intentionally spreading false info. You're becoming a virus.

The opening argument here is "The common cold is so widespread, the only thing keeping it from being declared a pandemic is the mortality rate NUMBER OF PEOPLE WHO DIE."

No shit Sherlock, that's the point.

It’s also worth pointing out that there isn’t 1 cold or flu virus. There are literally hundreds of different viruses that fall under the generalizations of “cold” or “flu”. They come and go seasonally and are mostly fairly mild, especially cold viruses.

Occasionally a particular flu virus will cause a pandemic. Obviously the Spanish influenza was the worst of all time and 50 millions died globally in a little over a years time. The swine flu from a few years ago qualified, but wasn’t extraordinarily deadly with just 12k dead.

Covid-19 isn’t comparable to any “flu” virus we have seen in a century. You want to compare it to the spread and mortality rate of Spanish Flu then there is a comparison to be made...

I honestly don't get what is so hard to understand here. Who gives a fuck about labels - does the common cold or the seasonal flu have the potential to choke a hospital system into disarray and cause unnecessary death due to being unable to get proper health care? yes or no?

No? then WHY are you comparing it? WHY?
