This had to be coming. They are changing the draft format too and it’s no longer going to be live in Vegas.

Back to the days of Pete Rozelle calling off names in a hotel ballroom on TV

Thats OK. ESPN and NFLN will still cover it basically the same way.

Hopefully their production crew has a little more pizzazz in mind...

Just posted an article in the draft discussion thread about how teams have been campaigning to have the draft pushed back but the NFL is resisting and is preparing to hold the draft as scheduled between the 23rd-25th April.

There's a non-zero chance that the whole NFL season doesn't even happen. If there's a lull and then a second peak next fall/winter for example

No one truly knows what things will look like in 5-6 months time.

I somewhat understand the leagues position on this one. They don’t want to delay things yet because they are hoping this virus will be neutralized by the start of training camp. Delaying the draft would likely delay everything. What I’ve read is that they will still hold it,  but it will be in a studio with no fans and the teams are apparently going to announce picks from their facilities. In all reality the season has a chance to be postponed or cancelled, they are just delaying the inevitable.

There is a chance that officially the NFL isn’t moving the draft yet because they would have to pay a penalty (or the full cost) to the venues in Vegas for cancelling. But if the city or state were to force them not to hold the event, they would not have to pay any fees.

Either way, I see no reason that the league couldn’t still reschedule at the drop of a hat. If there are no fans and no players then they could move the presentation into a TV studio if they wanted. And you can be sure the media would gladly change schedules to whenever the draft gets moved to because they are that desperate for sports programing of any kind.

You don’t think that there is some verbiage in the contract that lets them out because of some act of god or global turmoil?  Vegas would have a hard time holding anyone to any contract in this climate.
