Should have signed George Fant over Kelly.

Recommended Posts

George Fant is an up and coming OT in this league. The Jets obviously think so they signed him(3 year $30M $13.7G) to start at LT. I think we should have made a play for him to replace Conklin.

Fant did not play offensive line in college at Western Kentucky. In fact he only played one year there at TE. He went undrafted and was not even invited to the combine. Look at his workout numbers on his pro day.

6'4 7/8

296

40-4.84

Cone 7.20

Vertical 37 inches

BP 22

A tremendous athlete at 300 lbs. His role the last 2 seasons on the Seahawks has been similar to what Kelly's role was for us. He played a lot of TE in heavy packages. He is up to 322 now and based on his play in relief of an injured Duane Brown he can start in this league. He should keep on getting better with experience and in 2 years could be a top 10 OT! Just wondering what people think. He is 2 1/2 years younger than Kelly and better.

They didn't sign Kelly to start. They signed him bc he's a good backup and is fine with that role. They'll probably draft someone to start.

They signed Kelly to start in 2020. Maybe not beyond that, but he is clearly penciled I’m at RT now.

It was to give them an option vs a draft pick.

The better the rookie the less time Kelly is the starter

He’s a LT.

You mean he is athletic enough to play LT and that is a negative? It's not an entirely different position.

Summary:  We should have signed a left tackle from another team to play right tackle for more money to replace a cheaper guy who is already part of the team, can already play the position, and already knows the system.

Who was already part of the team? Kelly was a free agent who would have been gone had we not signed him.

In all due respect some of you sound, what is that word, stupid?

We are paying $5.7M a year for a career long backup that most of you admit will not be starting or should not be starting.

I also like how every damn one of you ignored the core of my thesis that Fant is an emerging player who could be elite at that position.

I'm sorry he is a primo athlete and can play LT. Conklin was considered a LT prospect when we drafted him. Having 2 OTs who can pass protect is probably a negative. To say nothing of how much it would suck if Lewan went down and we had a guy who can actually replace him.

Oh yeah I forgot. Now we have to use our 29th pick on an OT. Because we still need a starting RT.

He's never played RT, only LT.  Plus he emphatically said he wanted to play LT and looked specifically at teams willing to play him there.  Kid got a tough break because he was well on his way to being Seattle's starting LT in preseason a couple of years ago and he tore his ACL.  They traded for Duane Brown and he never got another true shot.

Could he play RT?  Probably but he would not have had interest in the Titans because of Lewan.

My guess is that the Titans will draft a RT to take over from Kelly ASAP and that they never were in the market of paying a good veteran starter.
