The fact that it started in China isn’t a reason to name it based on China. Only assholes who want to attack China for nationalistic or racist reasons call it that. That aside, the Spanish Influenza didn’t even start in Spain. As for variants, they are popping up all over the world. They at least make sense to regionalize based on where they are discovered. It’s easier for laymen to understand the difference between the California variant or South Africa variant or UK variant than it is to call it B.1427/429 or B.1.351 or B.1.1.7.
