He is passing the buck to local officials. That's like most areas, then. Which is unfortunate in my mind ... but if he truly monitors and forces them to close should numbers rise, I suppose that's not the worst thing. Allowing decisions to be made at the local level and not making a unified, comprehensive and organized effort is one of the biggest issues this country has had, in my opinion. Jamalisms
Well, yeah. If you don't open the schools then we can't use them as babysitting and many people will face challenges figuring out how to go and do their subsistence-level day jobs that can't be done at home. Our economy runs on the backs of laborers and schools are a major crutch that is used for many reasons far beyond simple education. This pandemic is highlighting that fact and you can't unwind the issue quickly. You're left with a choice of 1, a de facto partial shutdown because people can't leave home to go to work or 2, send our kids to school even though we know it will cause this virus to spread and kill at least some of them, along with others who are infected due to the spread caused by schools. Got updates from my son's school yesterday. - If there is one case the classroom shuts down until further notice. - If there are two cases in the school the school will be shut down until further notice. - If the New York City positivity rate is above 3%, the school will be shut down until further notice. - All students and teachers will be required to stay 6 ft apart at all times. - All students and teachers will wear masks at all times. - All students will be provided with masks - All surfaces will be disinfected throughout the day - Spaces like the lunch room and auditorium are not being used due to how the air circulates in those rooms. The school proposed multiple hybrid models: - Because our school has excess square footage one model includes full time instruction for grades three through five! - Another model was a week on a week off, and another was every two days - In the hybrid models, all students in and out of the classroom would follow the same presentation on a device Finally the principal did a poll for who wanted hybrid versus full-time remote. All the parents except me wanted full-time remote lol. Starkiller, and Titans279

oldschool
NY positivity rate is less than 1%. If they can't attempt to reopen schools in a safe and controlled manner no one can. Not sure what the issue is here... Rogue, and OilerTitanHybrid

Titans279
BTW in this podcast (whole discussion starts @37:04, specifically starts around 42:28) the hosts and Juliette Kayyem (former member of Secretary Jeh Johnson’s Homeland Security Advisory Council, among other credentials) all say exactly what I said this week. Places that are OK for some form of reopening tend to be too afraid to open (generally blue areas), places that are not in any state to reopen are reopening haphazardly (generally red areas). This is a pretty mainstream liberal podcast. The money quotes start right at 44:30 if you want to listen to the least amount of podcast! https://slate.com/podcasts/political-gabfest/2020/08/messing-with-the-census Edited August 8, 2020 by Titans279
