ESPN Update from Super Bowl Week in Miami on the status of Tannehill Negotiations

ESPN reporters Jeremy Fowler and Dan Graziano provide an update on Tannehill based on the buzz they are hearing during Super Bowl Week in Miami.

"The Titans' Ryan Tannehill, who took over the starting job from Marcus Mariota (the No. 2 pick in the same draft as Winston) and helped Tennessee reach the AFC Championship Game, is another free-agent domino this offseason. Here's what another NFL exec had to say about the Titans' looming decision: "He had a great year, but [the] scheme helped him a lot. He's going to get his money from Tennessee, but they can't go crazy. Things have to be perfect around him to perform like that."

Sources say the Titans' front office has yet to decide on the 31-year-old Tannehill in terms of whether he is worth the price of a long-term deal or even the franchise tag, especially with star running back Derrick Henry also set to become a free agent."

Strange wording on that highlighted quote, are they implying that the Titans haven't decided yet whether Tannehill will be the QBOTF or is that poorly worded and they are trying to suggest they haven't decided whether to give him a long term extension or use the franchise tag.

For the love of God stop responding to this non sense

I think it’s funny still don’t understand the basic concepts of NFL contracts.  Or they think any other qb can come in and replicate Tannehill’s success.  Bridgewater has always been Mr. Checkdown who

Assuming anyone can play QB in this offense is stupid. Did you guys not watch the games? Tannehill had absurd accuracy all year. Let's not pretend like the WRs were running wide open all year. @abc233

Seems pretty obvious to me.  Only the overly emotional posters on this Board don’t get this really simple concept.   Tannehill is an average QB who stepped into a great situation.  This is Robinson’s first opportunity to get the QB position right in Tennessee and he won’t settle for Tannehill long term.  You will see the expert posters dial back their stance on Tannehill in the upcoming weeks to attempt to be right on this subject.  The true football posters have been saying this starting at the end of the KC game.

This board is content being in an Andy Dalton type situation. Overpaying for average QB play because he's good enough to win some games, but not good enough to take us over the top.

These people were content with Mettenberger.  So Ryan Tannehill is a legend to them.

The organization faces similar situations with both Tannehill and Henry.    Both guys performed at an very high level this year....but there are legitimate reasons to question whether that success is sustainable and legitimate arguments against paying them big money.

The problem is, neither player has a viable replacement on the roster.....so the team's options are extremely limited.   They can either pay top dollar for the incumbent starter who played at a very high level in a contract year....or avoid the big cap hit by starting over from scratch and hoping another player can provide similar production .

Fortunately for the Titans, there will probably be a good number of veteran QB options available, including some household names whose careers are in decline and very near the end (Brady, Rivers, Flacco, Cam Newton).   But these guys are probably a one-year stopgap at best.  Their effectiveness has already slipped dramatically....and at this point in their careers, they're far more likely to get worse rather than better.

Andy Dalton's career has shared many parallels with Tannehill's career in Miami.....could he be a similarly good fit in the Titans' offense?    Or is he another guy nearing the end?

Perhaps a career backup like AJ McCarron or Case Keenum could step in and run the offense as designed?

The Titans will have a number of options available....but there are significant question marks with all of them.  The biggest question of all is whether they can be as effective as the guy who's already doing it.

Just as questionable if Tannehill can repeat his success this year, or if a slight regression in his play proceed the same results.

People are acting like it's a slam dunk that Tannehill is going to maintain this level of play.

Here you are, running around the board being a doomsayer and have not offered one alternative to the situation. Do you just like to complain?

What alternative is there. You sign Tannehill short term and you replace him when the better option comes. I think I been pretty admitt about that. If the organization thinks someone in this draft is worth it you pull the trigger, if they feel this offense can run as effectively with another QB you sign him.

You don't mortgage you future because he's the best today Iif the organization doesn't feel he's the QBOTF.

Who has a problem with that? Signing Tannehill short term until you find a superstar?

The question is can you do it.

If not ... are you willing to sacrifice this roster and go for a shittier/cheaper QB for the next 3 years?
