Davenport: Vrabel Unlikely to Hire a DC

Recommended Posts

Makes no sense to me.  Vrabel can hire who he wants and take as much control as he wants over the defense even with a DC of his choosing.

So go find someone willing to work with Vrabel if that is what Vrabel wants.

It may be like the Pats where they have someone on staff who is a "DC" in everything but name, including calling plays.

heard this earlier in the day. Folks on the staff aren’t happy about it and it’s why McKenzie left.

Someone inside the org actually told you this?

Vrabel preaches not holding his assistants back from opportunities, but what kind of message are you sending to your defensive staff when you choice to call plays instead of giving them the opportunity?  He will clearly have a big hand in the defense either way, but you'll never know how they will succeed unless you give them the opportunity.

Greatest coach in NFL history vs 3rd year HC... great comparison.

The comparison has more to do with the fact that the defensive play coller was not a coordinator in title. NE did it with Patricia and they also did it this year. Belichick was not making the defensive calls

If it comes out that Vrabel is the defensive play collee, it’s a more valid concern.

Not a good idea, IMO.   Historically speaking, coaches who have worn multiple hats on gameday have had a very high rate of failure.

How many offensive play callers are also the HC?  It’s a double standard.......

How can Kyle Shanahan be the head coach and call the plays at the same time??  Reid did it for years too.  Walsh, Holmgren, etc

Vrabel was a terrible D coordinator and when he was forced to take the reigns when pees went down last season.. it was horrid.

Of course people should be worried.

Can he succeed? Sure. He just hasnt proven he can yet as a DC.

Not to defend his shity play calling but that is a bad situation to be in. Doing your job and someone going down at work and you now have to do theirs as well on the fly can make you look bad.

If he knows going in he is doing both jobs he might be better prepared.

Don’t like this at all, if true. Feel that Vrabel really made strides as a HC this year in terms of managing the team and overall game management.

MV has earned some slack in how he builds/develops his staff.

I prefer this churn to keeping Mularky's staff together when they should have been upgrading; however, we had a pretty good group last year.  It might be difficult to upgrade...
