Just How Good Are The Titans?

Recommended Posts

The 2-4 Titans with their backs to the wall ran up a record of 7-3.  Translated to a full season that's 11-5 without Henry for one game.  A number six seed hasn't beat a number one seed in the NFL playoffs in ten years. The Ravens were this year's unstoppable team.  They had an average margin of victory over Seattle, New England, Houston and the Rams of 26 points.  The Ravens season scoring average was 33 points per game. The Titans annihilated them, holding them to one TD in Baltimore.

Surprised, you are damn right the NFL was surprised.  Believe me, this was not supposed to happen.  The Titans came into the playoffs as a feel good story.  The had barely got in needing a list of things to happen over the season's last few weeks.  Their first game was @Patriots.  Tom Brady's home playoff game record was 20-2.  The Patriots had the number two defense in the NFL.  The Titans beat them.

The Titans have the hottest QB in the NFL.  The Titans have Henry, the leading RB in the NFL.  IF Ryan Tannehill was QB from day one, AJB would have been rookie of the year.  But still, for the third week in a row the Titans are big underdogs.  We know why, the NFL doesn't really follow the Titans.  They don't have a clue about the Titans.  The Titans defense has stymied the top offense in the league, but you haven't seen a breakdown of why.  It's like they can't see the Titans.  They have already put the Titans in a slot and just accomplishing two of the greatest wins of the decade doesn't mean squat.

But what about us?  Do we realize just how good this team is?

Passing game just isn’t there to be considered great. Cannot be one dimensional and be a great team

Let's see just how badly the Chiefs' unstoppable passing attack blows the Titans'  one-dimensional offense out of the water:

Total Pass attempts:

Chiefs - 576

Titans - 448

Passing Touchdowns

Chiefs - 30

Titans - 29

20+ yard completions

Chiefs - 59

Titans - 58

40+ yard completions

Chiefs - 18

Titans - 15

QB  metrics

Mahomes - 65.9% completions, 8.6 yds/attempt, 105.3 passer rating,   36.4% first downs,  5.4% TDs

Tannehill - 70.7% completions, 9.6 yds/attempt, 117.5 passer rating, 44.1% first downs, 7.7% TDs.

The Chiefs have obviously thrown the ball a lot more than the Titans have.....but despite the dramatic difference in pass attempts, the numbers that matter most (touchdowns & big plays) are almost identical.   It's also worth noting that  Tannehill has converted first downs and touchdowns at a significantly higher rate than Mahomes.

I don't think it has sunk in for many on how good the Titans are. To start 2-4 and turn the season around to above 500 was good, but not good to great. We have been stuck in the perpetual 9-7 loop for several years, and had made the playoffs.

But not only did we win two playoff games against elite teams, we are in the final 4. That in itself is amazing. But this is an unexpected opportunity and the time is now. You never know what next year brings, what players we lose, and if the current players we have can keep up this amazing production. We have to take advantage of this small unexpected window of opportunity.

Two more games until history is made. This has to be the year.

If they beat the Chiefs this week and then manage to win it all. My doubt finally evaporates. Just too used to this franchise finding new ways to give me hope then dash them. I have a bowie knife ready at my dick if needed.

Glad you’re not a Bills or Eagles fan.

At this point, all that matters is the next game, not the previous 18.  The team will be quickly forgotten if they don't win.  Sad but true.

Not by the fans. We’ve made a damn good run.

I actually think the Titans are favorites to win this game.  What they did to the Ravens was exceptional football.  The Patriots game too, although close it was in control.  But I doubt in the history of the NFL has a team neutered the league's best offense and MVP on the road.  And it wasn't a lucky fumble or a 99 yard pick that just threw them off.  The Titans ran their game plan, scored and shut down the Ravens high octane offense.  People say, next year Jackson won't be that good because he got exposed.  That's partly true, but also the Titans defense managed the Ravens into a losing strategy.  Those 4th down stops weren't just lucky at a good time.  This team has been making huge stops all season.  Everybody next year isn't going to have some master key now to beating the Ravens.  We beat KC already, but this team is much better than the team KC played in Nashville.  They play better every week.

Posted this else where but it is worth inserting: we played without Jurrell Casey and Jayon Brown in the earlier KC game. Also Sharif Finch and LeSean Simms got lots of snaps, so theoretically we have upgraded our Defense at four positions.

In the first KC game, on Offense Taylor Lewan had 3 big penalties at least. Saffold was still getting eaten alive and Nate Davis was pushed around. All three seem to have gotten their act together since then. Humphries may be back, let's hope. Someone also pointed out something I had overlooked: Corey Davis did not play that game either.

Our tide is rising.

It's funny to think back just a few weeks ago.... the Titans were on the outside looking in and needed the Steelers to lose, and fans were complaining about backing into the playoffs and saying the team didn't deserve to be there.

Nobody backs into the AFC championship.    This team has earned it every step of the way by steadily improving week after week;  right now they're as healthy as they've been all season and they're playing as well as anyone in the NFL.

This is a damned good football team.

Much has happened over the season.  The OL went from stench to one of the best in the league.

Guys like Landry and Evans, in their 2nd season are now playing like vets out there.

AJ Brown stepped up and we had an all-pro level WR the 2nd half of the season.

We got this guy Simmons into the defensive line up and he is a total beast.

We saw some phenomenal plays by Jannu Smith.  Doesn't make many but when he makes them they are highlight material.

Henry has stepped up to have one of the most ridiculous runs by a RB in NFL history.

Tanenhill finished the season as one of the best QBs in the league.

Point is this has been a process.  We just kept getting better.  We would have been even better if not for some injury issues.

We also would have been better if some idiot didn't start Mariota for 6 games.

The fact is the Titans are Super Bowl caliber team and always were. Of course most everybody didn’t know this because they were decking around with you know who for a third of the season.  What’s hilarious is that many posters on here, including the OP, stated that they were perfectly content with the season being successful even if we didn’t make the playoffs. How retarded is that?

If you look at the Titans since the QB change, they compare to the other teams that are in the final four. In many ways, they are the most complete team.  They just might win the Super Bowl now that they got out of their own way.

The beauty of it is that Vrabel and the team are thriving on the underdog status and flying under the radar simply because of the poor start under Pineapple Tebow.
