Vrabel Needs To Go

If this is true then this team has no interest in winning on the field.

He's on the programs......lol

I think it's 100% safe to say now that the organization was caught up in promoting a franchise QB they didn't have. Cart before the horse and all that. They had interest in pushing the "Marcus for the next 15 years!" narrative above all, which is $ as long as it washes for long enough.

Of course football decisions have to trump that but I wonder how many orgs really do make that call in those circumstances. The Titans may be a bit unique in that they really have built a good team around the failed franchise QB, where as most teams in this situation would probably suck too much for a change at QB to matter.

Long winning well run teams don't care about that stuff, perineal losing teams care about that stuff.

I do think some people are promoting this idea vs Robinson and/or Vrabel are buffoons and were too stupid to start the right QB.

No arguments there. I wonder if a real similar situation has been handled differently by a better org, but then perhaps they don't find themselves entering year 5 of a 1st round QB who doesn't have an extension, but who they still promote like he's a top 5 QB. No wonder the casuals are up in arms, they were sold a lemon after all. It was destined to fail like this.

I want to believe the football people were hamstrung on this but it's hard to imagine they'd let it get as far as it did. Even Bud was convinced about VY, surely they could have done better than week 6, year 5 on MM.

You know what I mean by that. I mean the person paying Vrabel wanted to see Mariota succeed. Being on the programs shouldn't matter, but it does, and you know it.

Every team wants to win, but they also want to make money. It sucks that in this case, those two interests were in conflict, but they were.

Seems obvious...

It’s obvious MM started because he was on the team media guides etc....?

I don’t think you read his follow up that I quoted.

Yea those are hard to win.  Probably a better complaint is why we didn't bang Henry in there.  We shifted Lewan to the right side and should have just powered Henry over the right side on a quick hitting play.  Tannehill didn't run the sneak properly either.  Almost better to hesitate and pick an opening.  Instead he went high right into a guy.  Either way I'm letting Henry have the ball there or calling a play action pass.  I bet Smith or someone is wide open if we do that.  They were expecting the sneak first and Henry 2nd.  Give Tannehill a couple of options off play action and I bet it is an easy first down and the game basically ends there.  IMO going for it was the right call.  The play was not the right call.

Henry would have been met in the backfield.

Going for it was the absolutely the right call, not challenging the spot was beyond stupid especially when you have 3 timeouts. You have nothing to lose.  Vrabel is below average as a coach in my opinion. Lots of guys on here like him because he hangs out in the break room with the staff.

You take a QB #2 in the draft you obviously hope for the best.  Also, when they made the decision to pay his 5th year it was two seasons ago.  As for Tannehill, he had a similar career as Mariota and never seemed to break through.  So assuming they knew he could step up was as much of an unknown as hoping Mariota would.  What I saw from Tannehill was some of the best he has had to offer his whole career.  I re-watched the game and the guy was even better than I thought.  He was throwing darts.  I'd go as far as to say that if he were to keep this up I'd prefer to have him over a guy in the draft.  Tannehill might be the real deal who just needed maturity, coaching and experience.

Tannehill wasn't even the regular starting QB until his last season in college.  While he had some success starting right away in the NFL he still wasn't a final product.  Injuries slowed him down the last few years with the Dolphins but he obviously still has upside where Mariota apparently doesn't.  They gave Mariota every opportunity and he failed.  Not the coaches.

In the heat of the moment I absolutely wanted him to challenge, but he's 100% right about this.

Vrabels biggest mistake by far was calling a timeout and stopping the 10 second run off near the end

I'm torn on this one. I get what he was trying to do (preserve enough time for our offense to have a shot).

I think with the Chargers having no timeouts left and Vrabel realizing that there realistically wasn't enough time to go and score the TD (Remember, assuming LA made the extra point it would be a 4 point game), letting the time run off was probably wise after taking the first timeout and preserving at least some time.  And it ended up working out.  Let's suppose that Gordon did not fumble and the Titans had just stopped him on the one and they didn't review it.  The Chargers would have scrambled to even spike the ball to get a FG opportunity or time for one last shot at the win.  Had he taken the TO that would not have been the case.

He probably should have burned

them all on that drive. If you’re going to save the time-outs then use them.

After the shitshow that the ownership has put on for the last 20 years or so, can you blame them?  Hell, the stupidity and the backstabbing within the Adams family has been more entertaining than the on-field product.
