The numbers looked good, but he still wasn't. His happy feet, lack of pocket presence, and shit mechanics were still on display. I will give him credit---the 2 yards that he threw on that 75 yard to  screen to Henry looked great.

 

Not gloating.  Just trying to bring some levity.  Game 1.  We won.  Mariota didn't cleat himself or lose a major organ.

Yup.  Same issues that have plagued him.  Missed open WRs (Sharpe and Davis) in the 1st half and he still holds onto the ball  too long.  Took a bad sack on 1st down that pushed them out of Fg range.  

I thought Smith called a great game and managed Mariota well.

I'd give the game ball to Pees and Smith, but these players never flinched. Wake worldstarred Baker for the 100th sack. Secondary saw blood. We stayed disciplined: gotta give another ball to Head Coach. Wait, who signed Wake??? Too many game balls to give out.

This defense is good for 10 wins.  If Marcus just does what’s asked of him.  If we get down early, I expect to see games like the 2017 Steelers game.  He’s not going to be elite.  We don’t have a Mahomes, or a Watson.  He’s going to play precisely within the scheme. As long as he plays without mistakes inside that scheme, I don’t see why we can’t win the division this year

There's a number of comments in the game thread commenting on how BM looks like a real NFL QB, as opposed to Marcus.

So looking good while losing is really a thing.

I'm not talking about that throw, which was not a great throw, just good enough to get it to a wide open Brown.

 

MM missed Brown (I think) who was open in the right side of the endzone later on during the 2nd half.

Also, Brad Johnson was a great game manager. Mariota turns it over far too much to qualify as a decent game manager.

What had nothing to do with the QBs?  The win wasn't affected by one QB throwing 3 TDs and no turnovers while the other took TONS of sacks, gave up a safety, fumbled and threw multiple INTs... with a pick six?

From the Henry screen on, Mariota played very well. Before that, he was mostly atrocious -- the only positive I can say is that he did a good job avoiding huge mistakes and living to play another down, sometimes taking sacks, but sometimes avoiding free blitzers. And he did hit a couple big passes that led to early scores. His pass accuracy was horrible though and he left passes on the field, didn't move well in the pocket, and generally rushed throws when there was protection.

 

He sold the Henry screen very well. Once we went more balanced and had success with the run, he was dead on and created TDs in the redzone. 

 

I think Mariota's accuracy and decision-making are the same as always: when he's throwing between the seams (and to receivers he trusts like DW), he's decisive and accurate; when throwing downfield outside the numbers, he simply doesn't have the accuracy or velocity to be effective. I don't know why, but it's been this way his entire career. I thought after his 2nd season, he had developed a long ball, but it disappeared season 3 and has never returned (in fact, he regressed). I don't see how you can win consistently against high scoring offenses if you can't threaten the width of the field. You basically have to rely on a dominant defense, keep it close, and hope you physically wear them down and can stay balanced all game.
