Teams get a discount when they sign a player who has time left on his existing contract because the team is assuming the injury risk for the time left under contract. If Byard is injured in 2019, he still gets his money. It's all about assumption of the risk. BudsOilers Posted July 25, 2019 Report Share Posted July 25, 2019 In many cases, it's a win/win. The player gets long term security and the team avoids a full market price bidding war. It will be interesting to see the situation 3 or 4 years down the road when the market price is higher. Earl Thomas, who has the same agent, went ballistic in Seattle when he wanted a market re-do with 2 years left on his deal after doing a similarly timed extension/long term contract and it soured the whole relationship.
