Happy he got signed and it appears that he gave us the hometown discount!

I mentioned this was likely a couple of months ago and got blasted for it......it's an early signing discount.

Teams get a discount when they sign a player who has time left on his existing contract because the team is assuming the injury risk for the time left under contract.  If Byard is injured in 2019, he still gets his money.  It's all about assumption of the risk.

The team has always signed these types, pretty much every team does. Lewan, Casey, going back to Roos and Stewart. These types of guys don't leave in free agency, or at least rarely

No but it’s the manner in which we do it earlier than you see sometimes

In many cases, it's a win/win.  The player gets long term security and the team avoids a full market price bidding war.

It will be interesting to see the situation 3 or 4 years down the road when the market price is higher.  Earl Thomas, who has the same agent, went ballistic in Seattle when he wanted a market re-do with 2 years left on his deal after doing a similarly timed extension/long term contract and it soured the whole relationship.
