California city set to ban gendered words like 'manhole' and 'manpower'

The City Council in Berkeley, Calif., voted this week to ban gender-specific words in the liberal city’s municipal code, clearing the way for the changes to become official.

As a result of the vote on the proposed ordinance, the word “manhole” would be changed to “maintenance hole” in city documents, the news site Berkeleyside reported. “Human effort” would be substituted for the word “manpower,” and “sorority” or “fraternity” would be changed to “collegiate Greek system residence.”

When introduced, the authors of the new ordinance wrote that they were putting the measure forth so as to “promote equality.”

It’s California. It’s what they do. In the South they do X and Northeast they do Y, and the Midwest is all about Z. I think the nation will manage to pull through.

It is stupid. But this is the type of local politics shit conservatives prefer though, right?

The thing is no group is more triggered by getting misgendered then men. So many men lose their shit if it is implied they are gay when they aren't, or are forced to do something feminine like wear pink. I don't have a problem with being more inclusive in our language. Of course, I don't think it is offensive to say something like "hey Karen, can you man the table?". But for me to say "hey Karen, can you staff the table?" is not really an actual adjustment that is hard to make. I realize it might seem extreme or strange to a lot of people, but we are talking about one of the most progressive places in the country. This kind of thing won't be happening in your community any time soon.

When they look at something like this I bet they would say card carrying retard is still perfectly acceptable.

lol it's funny what gets you guys' jimmies rustled

Why would someone care about what someone else days in the a private forum and not about the act of seceretly recording someone?

Ppl really got riled up over grab em by the pussy in a country where porn is a trillion dollar industry and we have thousands of women sliding g down poles and selling their pussy to be grabbed.

I was making fun of it. Dont think its the same as getting "rustled".

But if you think it's only conservatives that like to talk about small things, ok.

I worked in Berkeley for a while.

San Francisco gets a bad rap nationally by right-wingers who think it's farther left than it is.  I mean it's liberal, but there is (or was) more balance and inclusion there than you'd think.  A place for everyone so to speak.  It's just that the national media tends to latch onto SF-stereotype stories and amplify them.

Berkeley?  Nope.  Our way or the highway.  It is as far out there as it would been seen.  I mean it's a nice place.  Always liked the food. But forgiving of those not in step with its core beliefs it is not.

To me true liberalism is Live and Let Live. Austin is (or again maybe was, been a long time) a good example of that.  Be who you are, just let others be what they are too.  Berkeley like many places on the other end of the spectrum is very far from that idea.

But really, there always has to be somebody/someplace on that end of the stick - however far the stick goes - and what place is more apropos than Berkeley?
