PFF: Tannehill among the most accurate ball placement in 2018

Tannehill was #5 in accurate ball placement to open targets, and tied for #1 with Drew Brees for accurate ball placement to targets with up to two steps of separation. He wasn't in the top 5 for tight coverage throws. Mariota was not in the top 5 in any of these categories.

It would be interesting to see where Mariota ranked, and where Tannehill ranks on tight coverage throws if someone has the ability to post that.

If this remains true next year the offense might run smoother with Tannehill than Mariota.

Ryan Tannehill, Tennessee Titans: 77.6%

Tannehill didn’t have the best of years in 2018, but he’ll get to start afresh with the Titans next season. A strong facet of Tannehill’s game last year was his work to open targets, where he fielded a 118.0 passer rating and a 77.6% accuracy rate.

Ryan Tannehill, Tennessee Titans: 71.2%

Tying with Brees for the top spot, an impressive 71.2% of Tannehill’s attempts to receivers with up to two steps of separation were deemed to be accurate. Tannehill completed 42-of-60 such attempts for 455 yards, five touchdowns and one interception last year.

Tannehill has always been an accurate passer. The knock on him was always arm strength.

Tannehill has a live arm.  His issue is that he occasionally finesses throws and puts too much air under them, giving them impression that this arm strength is lacking.  But I've seen him put a ball right on the money from 65 yards out.  I've seen him make impressive downfield throws on the run which were 100% arm.  Just look at his career highlights, plenty of arm talent on display.

I looked at both Mariota and Tannehill over their past two seasons.  And Tannehill is actually quite good when the defense holds the other team to under 25 points- 105 QB rating, 28 TDs/8 INTs.  He's 12-3 in such contests, which isn't much better than Mariota's winning % at 16-5.  But Mariota had a QB rating of 86.5- still bad.

Our defense has been MUCH better than what Tannehill is accustomed to.  There were a few high scoring contests like Houston in 17 and 18, Pittsburgh in 17, and Indy in 18 which really skewed how consistently effective our defense was.  In 21 of Mariota's 29 games played over the past two years, the defense has held the opponent to 15 PPG.  Tanne hill only had 15 GP in 16 and 18 where his defense played "well" (under 25 points), and they allowed 19 PPG in these contests-which is what we averaged in all games last year.  He's also significantly better in one score games as a whole, which kind of kill the edge that Mariota's clutch factor gives him.

Tannehill seems like a prototypical game manager, who will make few mistakes and even be pretty damn good when his team plays well.  He doesn't set the pace of the game and struggles when they fall into a hole and he wants to do too much, but maybe he'll reign that in if he trusts his team more.  Meanwhile , unless Mariota improves a lot, he's too inconsistent to put out there each week if there's a more reliable option.

Don’t worry. I’m sure if Mariota is causing more harm than good, he will be benched and done. But I think you’re bringing out the pitchforks early.

All this team needs is a capable QB who can run the offense.  JRob has assembled the most talented Titans of this decade, except QB.  Last year, the Titans gave up less than 20 points per game.  JRob used first round picks on OL and WR, he brought in FA WR and OL, he acquired Murray, Lewis and drafted Henry.  He brought in more than enough pieces for the offense to win in 2018 and 2019 with this D.  Yet, we couldn't score more than 13 points to beat Buffalo.  Even though Buffalo gave up 25 points per game.

All the Titans QB has to do is run the offense and get the ball out on time.

Easy in theory.

Tannehill's stat line in his last game against the Bills was 18 of 31 for 147 yards (4.7 YPA) with 0 TD and 2 INT, 4 sacks and a passer rating of 43.3. The Dolphins lost 42-17.

Watched a PFF on this. They didn't get too much into Tannehill but did note that a lot of his passes were screens iirc.

Then we'll ship his ass out too.  Still stands, the team doesn't need an elite QB to win and make the playoffs.  The QB does have to be good.  Tannehill is a somewhat unknown.

Does any part of this diatribe allow for walkaways or injuries that afflicted players other than the QB, or players that struggled to learn a new scheme in 2018?

It’s about the QB. The Titans won nine games last season. Could they have beaten the Colts one out of two?  IDK. I think with a QB playing as l described they would have done better. What do you think?
