I wonder if that teacher who saw an extra ten dollars a pay check is still in the black on this whole deal?

I am assuming odds are decent trump and co are going to to try to use the shipping delay (tariffs dont really hit until.items leaving Chinese ports tomorrow arrive in US) to aet a new urgent deadline.  With odds decent that some kind of.deal will be struck in the meantime, and whatever the nature of.that deal it will be called a HUGE win for the US.

In the interim though the markets are going g to be ugly.

If China really wanted to end this they would just say that they are blocking the sale of all goods to and from the US. People would freak out and Trump would be forced to cave within about a week.

Two big factors China has over us.  Control, like control over their population,  media, government. financials. And patience. As they tend to work off of a much much longer timeline than we do.

It's not that they want this.  It's that  they can handle it and wait it out better.

There are a ton of valid reasons to want to negotiate a trade deal, to be pissed in general.at how.they do things. Trump and co are not all that wrong on that aspect.

But we're just in a fundamentally different place than them and despite our economic strength our socio-political makeup is not well suited to this kind of.thing.

... and they simply do not care if a couple hundred million of their own die or starve. they've done it before.

I'm still trying to figure out what the real end goal is here.  China isn't going to play fair on the international market no matter how much you damage their economy (and yours in the process) because it is still going to be more profitable for them to play on uneven ground even in the face of tariffs.

It's always been an incredibly stupid plan.  It's anti-free trade, anti-capitalism, anti-freedom so of course, all of the "republicans" here are supporting it on their principles and not because the orange idol told them to.

"Tariffs will bring in FAR MORE wealth to our country than even a phenomenal deal of the traditional kind," Trump tweeted.

The only remaining question is whether Trump is too stupid to realize that the tariffs are paid by Americans, not the Chinese....or whether he's just lying again.

Nothing funnier than watching Trumpers try and defend Trump's stupid tariffs.

They're so profitable the Trump admin is actually giving farmers welfare supplements to try and hang on to their vote because they are losing so much money.

There is no way he really doesn't know, it's been explained to him and his own people have tried to talk him out of it. It's even hurts his own re-election chances

I have a pretty good idea where the idea is coming from:

“Tariffs will make our country much richer than it is today,” President Trump tweetedin August. So far, there’s not much evidence of that.

Trump’s tariff war has some clear winners, however—high among them, Russia. As shown in the left-hand graphic, Chinese imports from non-U.S. firms have continued to grow at a robust 18 percent year-over-year rate while those from U.S. firms have fallen. Among the hardest-hit U.S. sectors have been soybeans, autos, and oil. Whereas China had accounted for about 22 percent of U.S. oil exports in the two years to July 2018, it fell to zero thereafter. This has proven a boon to alternative suppliers like Russia, as shown in the right-hand figure. And so, in the ultimate irony, Americans are paying tariffs that boost the profits of Russian firms subject to U.S. sanctions.

If this is winning, Mr. President, it’s hard to imagine what losing looks like.

Goldman Sachs: Trump’s tariffs will benefit Russia and China

Trade between Moscow and Beijing has grown each month in 2018. The trend has continued amid growing trade tensions between China and the United States.

Through July, Russia and China traded goods worth $58.35 billion, which is more than a 25-percent increase in annual terms, according to Chinese customs data. The volume of exports from China to Russia for this period increased by 16.6 percent to $26.9 billion. China bought $31.45 billion worth of Russian goods, representing growth of 34.9 percent.

China will eventually turn into a net consumer and its people standard of living will rise as a result - i.e. they will consume more.  Something such as this will get China there faster than later as China has plans to bring out to do just that.

A consumer China is in our best interest.  That's what these idiots don't understand.  As the incomes around the world rise and we become more interdependent, everyone's wealth will eventually rise and the need for wars and tariffs become trivial.  Instead, we negotiate over how to best use abundant resources so everyone can profit.
