Still needing opinions/ideas

Recommended Posts

I've attached a rough idea about potential revisions to the front page. It's very rough but the gist of it is:

Add a sidebar with widgets.

Reduce number of pictures.

Reduce grid look to an extent.

Add a Titans web news feed to the bottom.

Add a board topic feed to the bottom.

No, I won't be jacking the CBS sidebar. I just needed something for a quick mock-up. I think the font is obviously too big at the bottom of the page. I could make it a lot smaller and potentially have the board feed beside the web feed instead of under it. The logo will also be replaced with a better one.

Ideas are appreciated. I can make pretty much anything happen if it's a good idea. I already think I'll add a function to allow video posts to fall in with the grid. I could also just make one of the boxes an area to put a preexisting video plug-in.

I'm serious when I say I would like to make this the best Titans site out there so I would like to know what you'd like to see on the site both in terms of content and layout. Don't be afraid to be critical if you make it constructive and offer ideas. You guys have given me a lot in terms of trust and a hugely successful donation drive for the new software. I want to give something back.

I promise this will be my last post soliciting ideas. :)

I'm digging the concept with the mock-up.

Where the the text is for the "Web Picks" links, I would use a simple sans serif, nothing to bold or out-there, just something visually appealing.

Oh, I completely agree. You think this concept is better than the current version?

I also might add something at the very top under the menu tabs.

What about having a short excerpt from the story automatically pulled and placed under the top story? I'm not sure it would work but just getting ideas.

Personally I like the collage type layout that was 3 images wide (heck make it 4 if you can). It's a nice landing page and much more graphically oriented / focused. I understand the idea of sidebars, RSS and a variety of links but I feel like too often they take up too much real estate and ultimately end up narrowing the actual content down to a column. On the CBSSports.com site I often feel like I'm being bombarded with text / info.

Since the site is so specific in terms of content, it might be possible to do away with sidebars all together. (since you wouldn't be aggregating 32 teams + League info). With 7 or so news "images/boxes" on the main site, you could keep a steady stream of information over the course of the week without it getting stale or presenting too much information. Maybe you could add an archive/rss tab would take the user to a more list oriented page that was more text centric?

I like the idea of a simple, focused, graphically oriented landing page. Keep the text to a minimum but let the user decide if they want to enter a more feed / aggregate driven page. I think if the main page is kept simple and straight-forward that more people will use it. I'm not sure if Titansreport.com should be a "headline" news type destination but rather more like an online magazine. (I forget the correct term).

That was my original idea. Maybe keep the top the same for the most part and have the more text oriented stuff beneath it? Perhaps reduce the rows by one to prevent the user from scrolling too much? Four pictures wide may give it a clutter look. Maybe I can do something more similar to the www.ottawasun.com site. That keeps the collage look but adds text elements. It may be a bit of a pain in the ass to code, though.

I personally like the concept of both. I'm partial to the one that is up right now because of how it looks on my iPad.

I think the short excerpt (just the lead) would be awesome and would make it more appealing to read.
