Is there a QB competition?

These two live in the same neighborhood of bottom third starters or high end backups/bridge QB's.

Tannehill has a better history over a period of time of actual production one would expect out of a QB than Marcus, but Marcus should and will be the stater when the season starts provided he doesn't get hurt in camp or preseason.

If Marcus continues to look as he has by week five then pull him, he starts missing time leave him on the sidelines, no more rope.

I consider Tannehill to be a middle of the pack QB.  Kind of like Dak or Dalton.  I also consider Mariota to be below that.

Will Tannehill battle MM for starting job?

Is Mariota on the trade block in round 1 this year?

Tannehill was looking like a stud until he got injured and then reinjured this year.

He very well could be an upgrade at this position and given a better OL and receivers and run game will only help him more.

You dont trade for him unless he is going to compete to start or take the job. Plain and simple.

This is equivalent to signing Foles. He would’ve gotten the job no matter what if we signed him.

If Tannehill was a FA he would have commanded a starting job and a salary that paid him like one.

We gave him a one year prove it deal. That spells “We are moving on” to me.

I posted this in the original Tannehill thread, but it probably fits better in this thread:

I don’t think it’s accurate to say that Tannehill isn’t here to compete with Mariota for the starting job. He just isn’t here to compete for the 2019 starting job.

Both of of these guys are free agents next year. One of them will almost surely be the 2020 starting QB. How they each look in 2019 will factor into that.

Trade is made for two reasons.

The first is obvious. There is no way you return in 2019 without addressing the backup QB position. Mariota's history unfortunately shows that he cant be relied to play a full season.

Secondly, you get a backup QB of this of this level because you believe the team is close to competing. And in the event Mariota does go down, you have a Qb that can win many of those winnable games that we lost when MM wasnt under center.

Ok think of this. What if Mariota plays most of the year but not well enough to resign for 20 million a year. How much would it take to resign Tannehill? Just thinking ahead

Maybe we break the bank for Wilson ?

If MM is the future, the Titans have no future. Regardless of any backup. Tannehill ain’t no Tom Brady or Kurt Warner either.

Tannehill is essentially protection against a 2-14 throwaway season if Mariota crashes and burns

If both Mariota and Tannehill died today we would not go 2-14
