So today was a pretty good day for Jayon Brown and Kevin Byard

The NFL announced its list of performance-based compensation for players whose playing time exceeded their salaries as compared to the rest of the team.    These payouts are designed to compensate players who play a ton of reps despite receiving a relatively low salary.

Jayon Brown played 851 snaps, which was the team's 4th highest total on defense....yet his $555K salary ranked #36 on the roster.   The league awarded Brown a performance-based bonus of $489,664....the league's fifth-highest performance-based payout for the 2018 season.

Kevin Byard led the defense with 1043 defensive snaps...but his $784K salary ranked #29 on the team.    Byard received a performance-based bonus of $117,580.

I've never heard of it. Great Idea.

If the league pays it.. then it doesnt incentivize teams to reduce player reps in order to save cash.

Is this a new thing?

No, Sharpe got the same kind of incentives as a rookie and it goes way back

I even think it goes back as far as McCourty and Finnegan but can't recall how far. I remember late round picks pretty far back getting money for performance

Byard still needs a new deal.  Hope they knock this out now instead of getting cute and waiting to the end of the season and then they have to deal with Mariota (probably) and Byard.
