Let's talk Pete Buttigieg - After that CNN town hall, dude deserves his own thread

Recommended Posts

There have been very few times I have listened to a politician and instantly felt that they fired on all cylinders for what I want in a President. Buttigieg did that for me during that town hall. I have already been intrigued by him, and knew he was a smart guy. But man, question after question, he just spit substance and practical solutions. One after another. He never lost his cool or got bombastic or grandstanded or seemed uncomfortable. I learned that he used to be a consultant for company managers, and now it makes sense. He is comfortable in his own skin and is comfortable talking to anyone.

Of those that have announced, he is in my top tier. He may be my personal favorite so far.

Ok, so before I get over my skis, tell me the bad stuff I need to know.

Mostly age -  he’s 37?

I’ll try to listen to the town hall later. Apparently it was pretty good.  I don’t know a lot about him. But we’re going from candidates in their 70’s to candidates in their mid thirties.

Just a number...

I didn’t watch the townhall because I don’t have time, but the generic negatives seem pretty obvious.

He’s gay. No, it’s not fair. And it’s not a huge negative among Democrats for the primary. But in a general election there will be a significant number of people who would not vote for him because he is gay. It simply makes him less electable.

Inexperience. Age is one thing, inexperience is another. He has no political experience beyond being the mayor of South Bend. Not even the mayor of a big city. And no foreign policy experience. That maybe could be overlooked if he were a governor or even mayor of a city like NY/LA/Chi.

Yeah it is impossible to win the presidency without prior political experience.

Bring gay is definitely a net negative. But I think there are plenty of people who would rather vote for a gay man than a very progressive candidate.

I also think it is possible there is more resistance to a female than a gay male. Merica and all.

Probably would be tough for him. Of course, being over 75 also hurts the current front runners Biden and Bernie and Bernie has the whole branded as a socialist thing (sure he tries to say democratic socialist, but IDK if people will see a distinction).

Wow, hard to believe a black guy is right up at the top with a white guy.  We really do live in a racists nation don't we......

By the way the best way to lose votes if you are a Democrat is to be gay.  You would lose black votes and Latino votes.  The conservatives aren't voting for the guy anyway because of his policies.  Gay or not.

Never heard of the guy but after Legal's ringing endorsement I'll give him a listen.

Compare him to Yang and see who you like better.

I will. I like Yang more every day though. No bullshit, he's 3rd for me behind Bernie and Warren.

Who said it's a racist nation?

You may be right about blacks and latinos. Not sure about that.
