Ravens to allow Za'Darius Smith to test his value in FA

My guess is Za'Darius Smith will be over paid.  However, with guys like Clowney and Flowers also on the market he might be less expensive than in some other years.  So he could be a viable option assuming Pees and JRob reaslly believe his best years are ahead and last year wasn't a freak year.  I just have no idea what his market will be.  He is young and if they think he is going to give us 8.5 or more sacks as a starter I'd seriously consider him.

I know Morgan had an off year.  Had some injury issues and split some time with Landry.  But he is decent against the run in the base and did have 7.5 and 9.0 sacks the two years previous.  Thus if he was willing to play for $5 mil a year or something (was making $7.5) I'd bring him back on a two year deal and let him finish his career in TN.

Yeah. It seems tons of people around here are high on him but I don't really see why. I'm fine with it but don't over pay.

I don't really know anything about him though outside his stats. Was he a starter or role player?

Would be nice to have a cheap vet that knows Pees system. Def upgrade to Rak & Morgan, but like I said, Morgan played well EOY

All free agents are over-paid basically. The key is making sure you aren't "excessively" over-paying in free agency.

The only way to really lure good players away from their teams is paying them more than those teams or other teams deem they are worth.

Yeah, and if you're New England, you somehow, miraculously, get players to sign cheap, short-term contracts that are heavily incentive based. And people actually believe it's "to win a Superbowl"

NE rarely keeps big big money guys after their rookie contracts.  Some of them get traded.

On a number of occasions the Pats have signed players a year early to get the dollars per year down.  This is something I have been arguing for some time now for the Titans.  If you hit on a middle round guy, like Shaq Mason and you offer him an extension a year early.  He gets a bonus and security a year sooner and the Pats end up with a guy for less than average per year value.  They are considering a similar deal for Thuney who was drafted in 2016.  By the way Mason was a 4th round pick and Thuney was a 3rd.  Maybe JRob needs to draft some OGs in those rounds the next few years instead of depending on guys off the street which is basically what he has now.

Not to open old wounds or anything, but Thuney was available to us with the 3rd Round pick we had given up for Conklin.  Instead we scooped up Sebastian Tretola in the 6th Round. Just sayin'... still.

We are 5-6 quality players away from being a significantly better team!

I agree. Jrob has been pretty good so far about filling holes in FA to allow him to go BPA in the draft.

Hmmmm....I'm usually pretty fluent in pornography short-hand nomenclature. Let me give this a go.....JRob has been filling so many holes in Fat Asians (?) that he's going to have Big Penis Anemia (?) during the draft?  Is this true?! Am I close?

I don't know what it is but I'm just not in love with Za'Darius Smith. I need to check out how much he moves inside to rush though & how productive he is from there. But he never did much until this year & its not like he exploded.

On top of that, the Ravens know their guys, especially the defensive ones. Does anybody think an organization as well run as Baltimore is just going to sit back & let a stud, prime ages edge player go check his value on the market?

Granted I don't think their cap situation is the best & they do have Mosley to resign & possibly Suggs.

Frankly Id much prefer Suggs to Smith. Won't be nearly the monetary commitment, will be a short term deal, is a much better run player (Smith isn't great against the run despite his size), is a pro's pro....the guy has a  notebook filled with all kinds of info on lineman & QB's, their tendencies, etc. We could really use a veteran whose performed & won on the level this guy has. And most of all, he's nasty. He's as tough & aggressive as they come.

Suggs is the type of short term vet signing that pay huge dividends.

Tretola ended up being a mental case but was promising at first.  I don't totally disagree we have to be careful trading away picks but again, at the time we made the deal for Conklin we had already won a bunch of picks in trades and the focus was on getting the best fit at RT.  You could go back and argue how we could have had a heck of an OG with the pick we used for the Clemson kid as well.

There's an old adage in management: "This year's solution is next year's problem." I'm just more cautious by nature. These moves cannot be viewed in isolation, i.e. "we got Conklin-- damn the cost!" We could have had Taylor Decker/Jon Thuney (and the other missing 2nd Round pick?) which is as good or better than Conklin/Kline-- and now there is a murmur to replace Kline with Conklin.

I'm more of a trade-down thinker. No matter where you pick, there's almost always worse and better players than the one you got. Being judicious in your selection (we've whiffed on quite a few) and having extra shots (not since the trade-down with the Rams-- they're in the Super Bowl and we're not) would be my modus most of the time beyond standing pat.
