Mueller Probes Public Statements as Effort to Obstruct

“As special counsel Robert Mueller wraps up his Russia probe, investigators have focused on conflicting public statements by President Trump and his team that could be seen as an effort to influence witnesses and obstruct justice,” CNN reports.

“The line of questioning adds to indications that Mueller views false or misleading statements to the press or to the public as obstruction of justice… Mueller hasn’t addressed the issue publicly, but prosecutors have dropped hints that they view public statements as possibly key in influencing witnesses.”

Oh dear lord, please let Giuliani and Huckabee Sanders somehow burn for their complicit aid to this shit-storm.

Since them getting charges would mean Trump is getting charged, I would almost rather see them charged than anyone.

HuckaSans probably won’t get charged with anything. She can lie to the press all she wants but I don’t think it will ever amount to criminal charges because she isn’t obstructing justice in the process.

Kellyanne is probably in the same boat. If she is only lying to the press then there’s no obstruction. I don’t think she has any power to obstruct justice.

Rudy could be different altogether. I assume it’s the same there in terms of the press, but Rudy could have done something illegal in his capacity as Trump's lawyer.

Maybe but it stated, "focused on conflicting public statements by President Trump and his team that could be seen as an effort to influence witnesses and obstruct justice".

Obstruction is clearly their intent but I don't know if its prosecutable. Have to prove intent so depends on their evidence. If they have emails or tapes of them talking about ways to undercut the investigation as well then maybe.

Calling it “the least I can do for my country,” the White House press secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, said on Saturday morning that she would lie for free during the government shutdown.

“Now more than ever it’s important that the stream of falsehoods and distortions from this White House continues to flow in a steady and uninterrupted fashion,” Sanders said. “To achieve that, for the duration of the government shutdown I will be lying on a pro-bono basis.”

Sanders said that Donald Trump had asked that she keep a full accounting of the lies she told during the shutdown so that she could be reimbursed for them later, but she turned down that offer. “I’ve often said that I like to lie so much I would do it for free,” she said. “This is a chance to put my money where my mouth is.”

The press secretary said that her offer had already inspired other top Administration figures to lie for free during the shutdown, including Vice-President Mike Pence, Attorney General Jeff Sessions, and White House doctor Ronny Jackson.

After making her announcement, Sanders moved on to a broad range of other topics, including her assertion that the government had not shut down.

I have really come to despise pretty much everything about Giuliani.

Trump team should be allowed to ‘correct’ final Mueller report, says Giuliani

“As a matter of fairness, they should show it to you — so we can correct it if they’re wrong,” said the former New York City mayor, who is a member of Trump's personal legal team. “They’re not God, after all. They could be wrong.” The special counsel's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In the wide-ranging interview, Giuliani also made light of the decision by Michael Cohen — Trump’s former attorney, who was recently sentenced to three years in prison — to testify in public before the House Oversight and Reform Committee on Feb. 7.

“Big deal!” Giuliani exclaimed sarcastically.

He also downplayed this week’s revelation that the president’s former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, allegedly shared opinion poll data during the 2016 campaign with Konstantin Kilimnik, a Russian citizen who had previously worked with Manafort in Ukraine and is suspected of having ties to Russia’s military intelligence unit, the GRU.

“Should he have done it? No. But there’s nothing criminal about it,” Giuliani said.

Lying to the public was part of the articles of impeachment against Clinton, and also I think against Nixon.

It's how far we've come that everyone overlooks that. But intentionally misleading the American public with the presidential bully pulpit is actually a big deal.

But yeah as far as being prosecutable, that would be difficult. But you have to separate what is a crime from what is evidence of a crime. Their lying may not be a crime itself (or maybe it is) but it could be evidence of one.

Nixon argued that he shouldn't have to turn over the tapes. He and his lawyer argued they should listen to them and just tell everyone what they said

Trump and Giuliani want it both ways.  They've had plenty of opportunities to sit down with Mueller and give their side of the story but declined.

Now Rudy wants to complain that they need a chance to correct the record after the fact.

This is no different in principal from the employee who gets called in by his supervisor for a disciplinary hearing and refuses to say anything.  Then on appeal, he complains he didn't get to tell his side of the story.

Failing that, Nixon then offered to have some practically deaf senator do the transcription.  Hilarious.

He doesn't want to just correct the record. He's basically saying he wants to be able to adjust the report to whatever he wants it to say before its released.

They're expecting this report to be pretty damning.
