Hundreds of TSA screeners, working without pay, calling out sick at major airports

Hundreds of Transportation Security Administration officers, who are required to work without paychecks through the partial government shutdown, have called out from work this week from at least four major airports, according to two senior agency officials and three TSA employee union officials.

The mass call outs could inevitably mean air travel is less secure, especially as the shutdown enters its second week with no clear end to the political stalemate in sight.

"This will definitely affect the flying public who we (are) sworn to protect," Hydrick Thomas, president of the national TSA employee union, told CNN.

Call outs have increased by 200%-300% at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, where typically 25 to 30 TSA employees call out from an average shift according to a local TSA official familiar with the situation.

Union officials stress that the absences are not part of an organized action, but believe the number of people calling out will likely increase.

This could he what forces Republicans to break with Trump. If Pelosi stands her ground (I think she will), this could backfire massively on Trump.

He's talking tougher right now bc he wants to fold and is trying to gain some leverage which he ain't got.

The Transportation Security Agency is actively trying to replace the sick workers.  the Agency just made some job posting on Craigslist (because free) that end with, "Come be a replacement TSA worker! You'll get paid... we hope, maybe, eventually. Who knows!"

If a couple of hubs go down, the whole system freezes up.  I seriously doubt that very many of these TSA employees can afford to work for an extended period of time without a check.  Eventually people have to find a job that pays.

I was thinking the same thing. If there was a focused TSA walkout in Atl, Denver, Dallas, etc, the government shutdown would be over within 2 days, period.

Trump said the shutdown can go on for years as far as he's concerned.  Yeah, he said that.

He's either too stupid to realize the consequences or running a bluff that everyone can see thru......or both.

Honestly I don’t know why more unpaid government workers haven’t just quit yet.

Or maybe they have and we won’t find out until their department gets funding again and thousands of people just don’t show up to work...

Because of the benefits and job security. A lot of rank and file federal workers wouldn't make it in the private sector.

White House Did Not Understand Shutdown Implications

January 5, 2019 at 11:44 am EST By Taegan Goddard 109 Comments

Washington Post: “Food stamps for 38 million low-income Americans would face severe reductions and more than $140 billion in tax refunds are at risk of being frozen or delayed if the government shutdown stretches into February, widespread disruptions that threaten to hurt the economy.”

“The Trump administration, which had not anticipated a long-term shutdown, recognized only this week the breadth of the potential impact, several senior administration officials said.”

Trump doesn't care about anything that doesn't affect him directly. Once the stories start coming in of how people are really impacted by this and he gets a bunch of bad press he will give in because he only cares about his image.

Wait till it's a 2 hour wait to get thru security at the airports because the TSA doesn't have enough employees to keep all the lines open.

I can understand that much, but it’s also assuming they are getting paid...
