Poker talk

I plan on playing a ton of poker tournaments now that the NFL season is over and I can't play online any more. Online you could see your results on many sites that track people's winnings and losses. Since I'll be playing live I'll have to keep track myself and plan on doing it in this very thread. Anyone else that plays feel free. I can either brag or be laughed at after the year is over.

I'm at the WSOP.  There were 7,761 entries, I cashed for close to 5K.  It was amazing this time.  This was my second Millionaire Maker.  I practiced and studied for two months.  My problem somewhat is

I just played the WSOP Millionaire Maker in Vegas, knocked out 2nd day 265th place, win $5990.  There were 7,275 entries.  I played with some top professionals, I didn't know any of them.  The photogr

OK.  Ready to talk about it.  I got knocked out day one.   I didn't get very many good hands.  I had two nice pots that would have put me back over the 50K starting stack and I played both very well.

Those poker sites that are still running are all tiny and could be shut down at any time.

I live 20 mins from Choctaw Casino and 30 mins from Winstar casino and they both have tournaments daily and they run series all the time too.

Here is a series coming up

That movie had some really cheesy poker play. When they first play KGB raises 10 times the blind(no pro would do this) and some of the play is horrid. I love the movie though

But the best quote in the movie is:

"It's immoral to let a sucker keep his money"

Someone should do a poker reality show. That would be awesome. I can't even watch the stuff on tv anymore. It's too scripted and they don't show enough of the game.

The WSOP aired a lot of their coverage live. But watching poker on TV is pretty boring

Do you play?

When I was younger I used to play a couple times a month with generally the same friends and an extended group of our random co-workers and their friends, etc who wanted to play. We could always get at least one table going and sometimes 2 or 3 tournament style if we planned it a little in advance.

Now everyone is all married with kids so we play once or twice a year if we are lucky and it's a shitfaced drunk game.

I have played a few times online but I just don't trust it. I think there have to be groups sitting 4 or 5 to a table and raking everyone who sits down and splitting it up later.

Not really possible in tournaments though

Nope but very easy to do online which is why I don't trust it.

Not to sound like some conspiracy theorist because I'm not one but I also believe the online table games are probably rigged too. Nothing is stopping them from doing it. There's no Nevada Gaming Commission or anything regulating and watching to make sure their odds are true and they aren't rigging rolls or cards depending on the amount of cash on the table.

I play pretty regularly, traditional Hold'em and Razz.

Haven't played a live money Hold'em in awhile though, as the last time I was in Tunica I got rolled with one of the worst beats I've ever taken. Didn't even really go to gamble much, but the girlfriend hit the hay early and I was trying to wind down for the night. Sat down at a table for about half an hour, and some cliched as Hell "I'm a balla" type sat down, cashed in for 500, lost it almost all within honestly 10 minutes, cashed in again for 300 more, lost it all in about 10 more, then cashed in again for 500 more right after. Dream player to win one big pot off of before you call it a night, right?

It's 5/10 No limit, I get Jacks out of position, bump up the blind to 3x, a few folks call and the this dude re-raises. Everyone folds but me. I smooth-call - nervous about having Jacks but knowing this guy is terrible.

Flop comes 2-J-8. Sexy, right? I have trips, no King, Ace, or Queen on board - rainblow flop that doesn't lead to a straight. Pretty ideal scenario for making some bank. I bet around 75, he calls. I'm putting him on either a high pocket pair or Jack-Ace (remember, he showed over the last 45 minutes he was fucking terrible, so I'm sure he would've called up with that)

Turn is a 4, I bet 125 - he calls. I'm a tad confused, because I can't put him on a reasonable hand at all. It's a rainbow board, with the only double suit coming on the turn.

Last card falls, a 6 - preventing a flush. I push the rest of my chips in and start to stand up knowing I'm leaving after this hand as I'm damn-near doubling my money. The fucker calls and turns over 3-5 offsuit. I'm not even kidding. He sucked out on a runner-runner straight that would have cost him around 500 if he'd lost - meaning in all he'd have lost around 1.5k in an hour. He never tried to get me out of the pot after his first re-raise...like he knew the whole time it would play out the way it did. Made no sense at all.

I can't even fathom how mind-fucked I was. A few hundred bucks isn't the end of the world, nor the most amount I've ever lost in a hand, but that was by far the most crushing, what-the-shit moment I'd ever had playing poker. I couldn't justify a single move he made the entire hand leading up to the last card, except MAYBE trying to bluff me off the hand preflop, and given how loose he'd shown himself as being, even that's a big fucking reach, and even thought I'm someone who likes to argue against people who rely on systems and math more than anything else (playing from your gut does count for something, though I typically only do it when the odds support it) I still couldn't believe I'd just lost a handful of Franklins to this moron.

Everyone at the table was shaking their heads like they'd just heard I'd been diagnosed with cancer or something. Could've heard a pin drop. I walked out of there to the casino bar a couple of hundred yards away and drank a double-shot of Jack every 5 minutes for the next half hour. Woke up to a nasty headache the next day, moreso because of the poker hand than the whiskey, but never would tell my girlfriend why I was in such a pissy mood the rest of the weekend because of that.

To make some luck of it, since I refused to play a cash poker game, she wanted me to show her how to play slots (not kidding...she'd never even played a slot machine before) - and I hit one for 700 on my fourth spin just showing her she could either pull the lever or push the button. Because of that, she thought you were almost guaranteed to win every 3 or 4 times and she ended up blowing through a couple of hundred (of mine of course hehe) in pretty record time.

God, just remembering that hand still pisses me off.

Damn that's fucking brutal. It's also the perfect example of why cards are always about luck no matter how good you are.

It's also a great example of why tournament style holdem is a better game. You only lost because that guy had bankroll and obviously didn't care about losing it. Broken clocks are still right twice a day and you unfortunately went all in at the 12 hour mark.

That reminded me of the craziest thing I've ever seen in Vegas. It was about 10 years ago and I'm locked down at a blackjack table with some friends. We've got the entire table locked down and we aren't moving for at least a few hours.

This couple we don't know is playing a quarter slot behind our table. They hit the jackpot. It wasn't a progressive or anything, just the machine maximum but it's still a nice hit. About 5 minutes later it hits again. They keep playing and about 10 minutes later it hits again.

By now the pitboss from the blackjack pit comes over and he's hanging out with us and watching the slot machine show. It turns out the machine was malfunctioning and that's why it kept hitting jackpots so often. According to the pitboss, they aren't allowed to shut down the machine until the player leaves. So this couple literally sits there for about six hours and keeps hitting jackpots every 5-10 minutes.

They have a couple security guards and a floor manager surrounding the machine waiting to shut it down. The girl leaves a few times to get them drinks and to hit the bathroom but the guy never moves his ass off the chair. I've never seen anything like it. I have no idea how much they raked in but it was definitely a lot and they walked away with shit eating grins on their faces.

Yeah, I'm typically a pretty slow-roller at cash games. I generally like to grind out about half of what I start with with safe top-10 hands in No-limit or just chase strong straights/flushes in low-limit. With the high-turnover of players and the set-amount of money I usually never stray-from when I sit down at a table, I'm not one for nutting up on flashy hands or trying to bluff old, rich, bored people off theirs too often unless I'm pretty sure I can get away with it.

The first, and only, hand of poker I ever played in Metropolis was a good one. Me and the guys took a roadtrip from Martin, TN one Saturday night - everyone only had a couple hundred bucks spare to gamble with, we were poor college kids afterall. I think I had the most spare cash at 250. We gameplanned the drive there about what strategy we were going to use, when we'd agree to get up and take breaks, walk off a dry table, or get away from a high-action one....yadda, yadda, yadda, basically a bunch of college kids scared of losing way overthinking it.

We sign up for tables, and the wait list is ridiculous. The 1-2 limit game had 3 openings and there were 5 of us, with about an hour anticipated before anymore spots would open up at any other tables. There was one spot on a 2/4 no limit, and against the advice of my friends, I put my name down. I got "the talk"....and basically just convinced myself I'd only play 10's or higher, win a decent hand or two, then leave. Basically just don't lose much money while drinking free beer.

I walk up, cash in my full roll, and am dealt aces the first hand. Everyone up to me calls, and naturally I raise. At the time, the poker phenomenon was still pretty new, and I was barely 21, so I guess everyone there thought I was full of it. Even the dealer gave me a "what the Hell are you doing kid" face, since it was the first hand. Naturally, I got no respect for my bet and I was re-raised by the button, the guy 2nd to my right called the raise, which I think put the pot right around 110ish. I look over and see my friends' faces all ghost-white like "what in Hell are you doing man?" and I just grin and push - Both guys called (they were sitting at with around 1k stacks each) - turned the cards over and one had Queens, the other Ace/Queen suited (genius, I know) Needless to say, I tripled my money, got up after an epic 3 minutes of poker and drank beers the rest of the evening while my buddies begged for me to loan them a few extra dollars.

You don't even wanna know how much shit-talking I did on that drive home, haha.
