Burns is not a good fit for Morgan's spot on the strong side of the defense. He's too weak in run defense.  Chase Winovich is a better choice in the 2nd if we don't sign someone in free agency.

All the evals i see of him say his only negative is his weight but even then they say he holds his own in run defense. Important to remember reports are hes bulking up for the combine so we dont know how that will affect him. At 6'5 he definitely has the frame for it though

We need to consider the fact that JRob has historically used his top pick to address the team’s most glaring and immediate need...and right now, offense is a much bigger need than defense.

It’s also worth noting that last year, JRob invested his top three picks on defensive upgrades, and one of two first-round picks in 2017.

Consider JRob’s track record and the team’s current situation, it’s probably a safe bet that this year’s first round pick will be used to bring in help on offense at a ball-handling position.

JRob definitely has a history of going biggest need in the 1st. The problem is figuring out that need and we probably can't really do that until after FA.

I think we probably need a vet WR more than another rookie though. Not too worried about TE yet. Seems like a value or luxury pic. OL would be boring. I could see it but not rooting for it.

So if they go WR in FA or trade, that leaves D in the first, probably OLB or NT.

Look at which position would play the most snaps.  In general, would you rather use the 1st pick on a player who plays 500 snaps or 1000 snaps?

Long, thin pass-rush specialist who possesses elite get-off and stride length to simply outrun overmatched tackles around the rush arc and into the backfield. Burns' edge speed and varied rush approach should translate to the league, but his skinny frame and lack of play strength are absolutely concerns moving forward.

Weaknesses

Thin frame with spindly limbs

Frame might not be able to handle enough weight

Lacks functional play strength

Lacks necessary dog for consistent combat at point of attack

Gives away his position when setting edge

Allows length to go to waste, catching too many blocks with shoulders

Sticks to blocks once he loses his frame

Struggles to play through redirect blocks on inside moves

Will have issues converting speed to power at top of the rush

Needs more strength and force as hand fighter

So do I, just don't think the go with a slot guy myself with Walker and Smith coming back. I think Jrob needs to bite the bullet and sign a guy like William's who is a true outside threat to truly balance this offense.

To me this is the big question. Not whether they sign a FA WR, but whether it’s    an outside guy or a slot guy.

A few guys can do both - Tate, Cobb, etc

But Humphries, Brown, Beasley, Williams seem to be more specialized.

I agree that's why I think an outside guy needs to be priority but there are only a few guys that fit the bill so Jrob would probably have to overspend to get the right guy. I think they are fine in the slot with the guys coming back from injuries.

My thinking is that they don’t have any real slot guys on the roster anymore. Tajae and Taywan have been primarily outside guys, along with Davis.

Then you couple this with the fact that the top 2 WRs in the draft are outside guys, along with a lot of the better later round guys too, and to me the optimum and most likely avenue in FA is to sign a slot guy since several good ones are available in FA

But I certaunly wouldn’t be terribly surprised if they signed Williams either.

Sharpe was one of the top third down wr in the league before he got hurt and I believe most of those came from the slot. Walker and does most of his damage when lined up in the slot as well. We have only one consistent outside threat IMO.

Tajae Sharpe is a reserve caliber WR. He gets totally shut down vs man coverage. He’s a free agent in 2020 anyway and won’t be retained.

Sharpe is better then that and I would rather keep him then over pay a guy like Humphries.
