I know people that lost their retirement investing so much into the company they worked for.

People work for a company for decades and keep buying company stock and it becomes a massive % of their overall wealth. It's not uncommon for any company after several years to go way down in value or even go bankrupt, not matter how strong it looks at the time.

The 8% I transferred into bonds as of mid-August is up 0.3%.

That's better than the roughly 5% I would have lost if I kept it in the FXAIX fund it was in previously (rough guessing on dividend reinvestment because I'm lazy).

8% of your portfolio making .3% has to be miniscule

It is. 8% losing 5% would be minuscule as well.

But I'll take not losing.

A better question is what are you doing with contributions? What are you buying?

A mix of FXAIX, company stock and Target year retirements.

I'm mostly just cutting the top and bottom off in a time of uncertainty. I will gain less if the market goes up and lose less when it goes down with this blathering moron in office. But I'm not looking to fully play a guessing game and this is a temporary set-aside.

At your age(even mine) it's better if Trump does mess up the market and make shares cheaper and then let the market go up after that. You;re not making or losing anything really anyway, you;re in the accumulation phase.

I'm more in the real estate vs. stock market debate right now. Real Estate in certain Nashville neighborhoods has a bank-free path to 15% or more annual return (without equity counted in).

Pretty hard to ignore those numbers, even with an active investment like rental property.

I hope it tanks through early Jan so I can max out our Roth IRAs

You doing ETFs, single stocks, or just straight Roth  IRA contributions?

I go in-between what to do as I have a SEP IRA with a 50k yearly limit, so have to choose between that account or money market.
