TheBukafax
The TCL 9s is recommending is a good budget TV that would fit well for value/cost. I picked up a Vizio M-55 with a PS4 Pro in March. Love the TV. Has good HDR. Grabbed it at Costco for 749.99 CAD. So probably 500USD. If you don’t care about picture quality, why go 4K?

Really like it. I don't remember how much it cost to be honest. It was like 400 or 500. Tv's are so cheap these days. Soxcat

Is a cheaper 4k worse than my Samsung plasma from 4-5 years ago because it's so defined but lacks some hardware and there's blur or distortion? If you get a new TV, you need to focus on HDR. If a TV, like the lower model TCL, cannot do HDR very well, you are not going to get much, if any improvement, from watching 4K on it versus your current TV. So if you are looking at that route, I recommend not getting a TV now - it would be a waste and if you have a plasma TV, it might even be a step down in quality, especially in non 4K content. HDR needs peak brightness, high contrast and expanded color. That P series TCL will be able to do a good job in HDR and with so much HDR content in streaming services, it would be a jump up in entertainment quality if you plan to watch much Netflix or Amazon or Apple streaming (many current popular shows and movies are in HDR on those services and broadcast TV and Directv are going into HDR.) The other lower priced TCL model would be able to technically display HDR but not it would likely not be able to present HDR well enough to emphasize it as it was intended. Since you are hesitant, not getting one now would be a safe route. It is a given that TVs are getting cheaper and better every year. So waiting would only expand the value of your next TV purchase. With that said, I really like HDR content and again, watching it on a TV that presents it well, is a noticeable improvement in TV entertainment. Jamalisms
I do need a second tv. Not replacing the first, putting one in a new place.

If I were you, here is what I would do: Go to Best Buy (easy return policy but short period - 15 days) and buy this year's or last years TCL P series. Setup the TV using the recommended settings at rtings.com (make sure you do this step.) Get a 4K subscription to Netflix, or upgrade your current subscription if you already have Netflix. Watch some HDR content on it - make sure that HDR is playing on the TV (the TV should have some notification it is presenting HDR - also if you have any problems, get an account with that AVSforum so you can ask other owners about settings etc. - it is a very responsive and helpful place) Also, Netflix support can help you get it going if HDR is not working. Watch as much HDR stuff as you can in a week (15 day return policy.) If you are not impressed, return the TV. That way you get to experience real HDR and can make an informed decision if it is worth it or not. If you set it up right, I think you will be impressed (I still remember the first time I watched HDR content on a TV.) Btowner
A great resource for buying and configuring a TV for optimum viewing: https://www.rtings.com/ Like @9 Nines mentioned. You can purchase the TV, but instead of getting a 4K Netflix subscription, just search YouTube for 4k videos.

Check at AVSforusm to see if it does. Edit: per a response on the AVSForum owners thread for the TCL 2017 P series, it does have HDR on its Youtube. We don't do cable. Tempted to just buy a 1080 but how quick is the trend towards 4k and how quickly will I regret not having it for basic functions like streaming? I read the title and thought you were talking about a $4,000 tv. I'm thinking Jamal must be loaded.

Went to Best Buy to get the TV 9's recommended and they didn't have it in stock or on display despite that the website said they had it in stock and on display. Took it as a sign and hit the pause button. wiscotitansfan, and Number9

currage
I just went from a 55” Panasonic plasma (55VT50), that I loved, to a 65” LG OLED. My warranty was set to expire in August and I had some clouding on the plasma screen. BestBuy came out and gave me a credit for my old plasma and I used it to purchase the OLED. I bought last year’s OLED65C7P on clearance. I’m pretty happy so far. The picture is definitely different than the plasma, but I’m getting used to it. 4K content looks incredible! It’ll be interesting to see what DirecTV offers, as far as 4K sports content, this fall. 'Nator
