Stockton Ca. to experiment with Universal Income

Yep. Which should concern everyone.

If billionaires wanted to feed everyone, they would. They'll wait until the economy is no longer sustainable, and then make the switch. The wealth disparity won't change, and there'll be less incentive for people to pursue innovation/entrepreneurship.

Universal basic income Is just a base amount that everyone is guaranteed. It doesn’t mean that you aren’t allowed to earn more money. And if people aren’t motivated to earn more than 6k a year, they weren’t going to be motivated without the UBI. The goal is to help the severely low income people get a boost to help them get out of poverty.

How do you pay for all this free money to everyone?

You can't automate everything, which includes the work illegal immigrants are doing now.    This seems like a good excuse for boosting border security and over time sending back a lot of the illegals.    For people losing their job to automation can do undesirable jobs the illegals are now doing.

poor people are a horrible investment...you really have to try to be poor in this nation.

I think the government should just hand every person $50,000 a year once they get to age 21.  If they want to work, fine.  If they work however they will have to pay 50% of what they make in taxes so..... who the hell wants to work.  Starkiller and his biddies can decide how many cars, air conditioners and such we make and how much they will cost at the government store (used to be Home Depot).  Bread lines will be 8 hours long but hell, nobody works anyway.  A great life.

Meanwhile, the comrades that run the party get plush accommodations because they are so valuable and smart.  If you don't like that.....   enjoy prison in our new facilities in the Alaskan wilderness.

You mean like all the free money the corporations and top 1% just got?

It would be interesting to see all of the actual math on this stuff.  Obviously numbers can be spun depending on what side of the aisle you sit on, but is a UBI actually feasible mathematically if all "poor people entitlements" and "rich people loopholes" were closed up and we went straight UBI.  What would the UBI "salary" be in that scenario and where would the income cutoff be to receive a UBI?

Stockton is a dying city and has been for the last decade or so. It got crushed by the Great Recession. It would make for an interesting case study.

Republicans have claimed that cities and states are laboratories for policy. Why be so certain that it will fail, don’t we want cities to experiment? Many conservative thinkers have already mused about UBI, at least theoretically.

What is going to stop people from flooding there? There’s no way to insulate it. It’s going to fail, and it will give the far right ammo against it in the future. The same thing happened to Tenn Care. You couldn’t stop people from using it by flooding into the state. Maybe I’m wrong, but that’s my first impression.

I feel like it has been tried, many times. What is welfare, food stamps, etc.? UBI is just the same with another name.

Ample data states that immigrants commit less crime per capita and generate far more in GDP than they conceivably cost through use of services/infrastructure.

Its generally citizens that are drags on the economy. Just a fact.
