CJ will hold out

But make no mistake: Johnson wants a new deal, and he won’t show up for training camp without one.

A year ago, Johnson received what amounted to a $1.5 million pay raise, when the Titans moved up money he’d earned in escalators from 2012 to 2010, and added some incentives. When he finally reported for training camp, Johnson – who had $30 million in guarantees in mind — said it wouldn’t happen again. And I believe him.

Indications are Johnson’s not going to budge this time. I’ve heard it from too many sources to think otherwise.

The Titans were limited by league rules on what they could offer last year. This year that isn't the case.

You lean on CJ and ride him into the dirt until Locker is ready to step up and become the franchise QB that people hope he will be. Hopefully the 2 will overlap for a year or so.

Trading CJ is ridiculous unless you get a franchise QB in return. Oh wait, we just drafted one so I guess we can put that to rest. CJ is entering year 4 and has taken a pounding. The likely hood of hi

The Titans will have to pay him within reason whatever he asks. First round pick is depending on running game, you have to pay the top 5 NFL running back. Beg for the lowest price, then sign him right away.

How is it BS?

The Titans should be thinking long term, not about 2011?

Do you really think Jake Locker is going to lead the Titans to the SB in 2012? Really? iF you do, then yeah sign him

But the reality in it all is that by the time Jake Locker is a legit starting QB in the NFL CJ will not be the same guy you saw in 2009. He is only going to get beat up more and slow down.

Im sorry, that is the life of an NFL RB. They do not last very long and especially ones that are run in to the ground like Fisher had CJ do.

Short term thinking is the American Disease, trade him for the future so when Locker is ready , the team will be.

So TW89, when do you ever stop thinking longterm, and start thinking win now? It seems like you are always about the future, but never stop to realize when the time to act is present...

Thats probably what it is. Just trying to sound smart, by saying the most asinine thing. Sometimes the obvious thing is the obvious way to go. CJ is the obvious star and centerpiece of this team. There is NO reason to trade him. The idea is foolish...

I wouldn't go so far as to say he's just trying to sound smart. It is a strategy but it's incredibly risky and quite frankly not worth the risk. It's like trading down and still getting Locker. Sure it would've been great to get an extra 2nd or 3rd or something and still gotten Locker but it's not worth the risk of losing him.

In this case ppl try too hard to be Jimmy Johnson. Sure it would be great to trade him and get multiple stars out of it but it's a much safer bet to keep CJ and continue to build the team. Ride him as Locker learns and hope Locker will hit the beginning of his prime while CJ has a cpl years left. It's a much safer bet w/ similar results.

All of this sounds reasonable and would apply to many talented RB's, but the principle remains: you don't trade away future HoF talent. You just don't. LaDanian Tomlinson lasted a lot longer than the typical shelf-life of an NFL back. It's not his fault he was on a Marty Ball team, but they had their shots at the title. They were within striking distance of it numerous times. Emmitt Smith lasted far longer than the typical shelf-life of an NFL back and he set the record for rushing yards, along with helping his team attain 3 Lombardi trophies. Barry Sanders is another example of a RB who lasted longer than the typical life-span. You would've called the Chargers, Cowboys, and Lions morons had they traded those guys away. Actually, you could still call the Lions morons but that's another discussion altogether.
