9 Nines
The bear comment was silly but what was not brought out during the hearings is how poorly Michigan's education system is doing under her. In her position, she controls all education legislation in Michigan. Pretty much nothing could be done education-wise without her approval and leadership. During her tenure, Michigan's educational testing showed it went from middle of the pack (25th) to one of the worst states in the nation (47th.) For-profit, as opposed to not-for-profit, charter schools exploded in Michigan. Michigan has a higher percentage of its schools as for-profit charter schools than any other state. Michigan, with all its budget problems, is feeding money into schools run for profit, while seeing its education system fall from average to one of the worst in the nation. Basically for an NFL analogy, this would be like an NFL team hiring some head coach who has one of the worst records in the league and while amassing one of the worst records in the league, ballooned his other team's payroll beyond the salary cap while fielding some of the worst players in the league. 9 Nines
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/answer-sheet/wp/2016/12/08/a-sobering-look-at-what-betsy-devos-did-to-education-in-michigan-and-what-she-might-do-as-secretary-of-education/?utm_term=.5f00eb5a8fd4 This articles cites example after example of for-profit schools in Michigan making a lot of money and paying its employees high salaries while showing some of the worst educational results in the nation. It also reports that under her, legislation was passed making it very easy to open a charter school. Just takes money, no teaching credentials, nor track-record in education, as most other states require. Then she water-down regulations making it nearly impossible to close a school. So even though many, to most, of Michigan's charter schools are performing poorly, and would be shut down in most other states, Michigan has such lax regulations, under her, the state has to keep funding them. oldschool
DC tried the charter school thing and it failed miserably as well. I cringe at thought of it being pushed nationally.

abenjami
You guys are missing the big picture here. Remember when Trump promised to build a wall and deport all illegal aliens? Obviously he's got to replace those blue collar workers being deported or unable to get in the country. Killing education is a great way to ensure legal citizens become blue collar workers and fill those jobs, decreasing the unemployment rate!
