  1. I think he's fundamentally unfit. Like I said, we won't agree on everything and that's okay. I do think it's important sometimes to step back and remind ourselves that we are more alike than we are different. You are not my enemy even if we challenge one another on ideas and principles. A democracy without debate is not much of a democracy.
  2. I believe most of this is where you and I can find common ground. I may lean left on certain issues and so we disagree vehemently there and that's fine but I believe, as you do, that there is merit in self-determination and an intellectual honesty that is derived from reality and not what I'm being told on tv. I truly believe we can find a compromise on the rest. Maybe not Trump and your probably not going to convince me that Hillary is as bad as you believe but the stuff that matters at least.
  3. He basically tried to tell me that direct quotes from the framers saying in explicit terms their intent was irrelevant because the 2nd amendment has the word militia in it. Let's just forget for a moment that the government's right to form a militia is outlined in other parts of the constitution and the first ten amendments were solely composed of a "Bill of Rights" that were to be considered guaranteed protections for all citizens for a moment or that the entire freaking point was for the government to leave us alone as much as possible.... The argument just doesn't make sense in the purest form. It does to them, and that's fine. But I will fight it because it's not what I want and I don't believe it's what the framers would want and I don't believe it is in keeping with the true spirit of the constitution.
  4. The claims against Moore are pretty credible. All the women went on record and corroborated the accounts independently and there have been interviews with other people that adds further weight to the claims. Moore should step aside and the Republicans should have the moral courage to push him aside if he doesn't. Hannity is a douchebag of the highest order. He should have been dropped long ago.
  5. You're confused but that's fine. I have better things to do than argue with you about multiple interpretations of a word. There is a ton of stuff out there if you bother looking it up that absolutely supports the intent of the Fathers and it has nothing to do with a militia that falls under the federal government which is just retarded.... what would even be the point of the second amendment? That the government has the right to raise a militia? Yea, no shit. The AR-15 thing is a completely different argument. I'm pretty sure that falls under one of those false argument clauses that someone smarter than me can explain.
  6. Sure. That doesn't change the intent of the 2nd amendment though. You disagree with the necessity of the 2nd amendment. That's fine. Whatever. We can disagree and that's okay.
  7. The Federalist papers were written by the same people who wrote the constitution. You're taking a very narrow view of the word militia because that fits your intent but it clearly was not the intent of the fathers if you read their words and not focus on one word in the constitution that can be interpreted multiple ways.
  8. It's explained in the Federalist papers. They don't mean a militia in the same way that we view a militia today. The fathers' believed that if the government became tyrannical, an armed public would be able to rise up against them. Of course, the situation has changed some since then but that doesn't change the original intent.
  9. Several of the Federalist papers talk about if the government ever became tyrannical the best line of defense was a militia capable of rising up in opposition formed of the people.
  10. "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." Thomas Jefferson, a proposal to the Virginia Constitution. "Before a standing army can rule, the people must be disarmed; as they are in almost every kingdom in Europe. The supreme power in America cannot enforce unjust laws by the sword; because the whole body of the people are armed, and constitute a force superior to any bands of troops, that can be, on any pretense, raised in the United States” Noah Webster, 1787 "That the said Constitution shall never be construed to authorize Congress to infringe the just liberty of the press or the rights of conscience; or prevent the PEOPLE of the United States, who are peaceable from keeping their OWN arms." Samuel Adams "The right of a citizen to keep and bear arms, in lawful defense of himself or the State, is absolute. He does not derive it from the state government. It is one of the “High Powers” delegated directly to the citizen and is excepted out of the general powers of government. A law cannot be passed to infringe upon or impair it because it is above the law, and independent of lawmaking” Cockrum v State, 24Tex394 (1859) “if the representatives of the people betray their constituents, there is then no recourse left but in the exertion of that original right of self-defense,” - Alexander Hamilton You know, you guys told me the 2nd amendment was only about militias. I did some surface research and it seemed to confirm that but now I'm reading more and more and it becomes pretty clear that the founding fathers intended the 2nd amendment to include more than just a "well-regulated militia" in the sense that we know it today.
  11. That’s true. She’s done enough to justify her disappearing from politics for the good of the party and the platform though. I wasn’t trying to equate the two.
  12. Normally, I don't like to see guys get hurt and especially the truly talented guys because I think the game is lesser for it when they aren't on the field and who wants to see someone go down with a big-time injury like that? I'll make an exception for this douchebag though.
  13. He slipped on one play where he was close to the line and all alone on an island. I put more blame on the defensive coordinator for that than on Adoree. That's a pretty tough spot for any corner and they would never have put a lesser corner in that situation.
  14. The thing is.... there are monsters on both sides of the aisle here. I want bad people gone, regardless of party. Hillary included. She just needs to go away. Moore needs to go away. You should not be allowed to serve in a public role such as this when there are credible allegations coming out like this. There were multiple women, all who went on the record, and all told similar stories independently and all were approached by the press not the other way around. That gives a ton of credibility to the story in my opinion and Moore should step aside. Allow the Republicans to have a write-in candidate and let's move on knowing that compromise made us all better.
  15. I had to do some research because admittedly, I didn't know this. I mean I knew the clause but I didn't know that it was only directed towards state militias but clearly it was with a little research.... so thanks for teaching me something here. So, while all of that may be true and there is an ongoing debate of public opinion, there is only one opinion that truly matters and that is the supreme court. The supreme court's opinion on the matter has gone wildly conservative in the past 15-20 years. District of Columbia v. Heller, McDonald v. City of Chicago, and Caetano v. Massachusetts are three cases in just the last ten years that have solidly asserted that gun ownership is an individual right and that the constitutional right to bear arms supercedes the state's right to restrictions. Just this year, there was a case that challenged for the right to open carry and laws just as i've described earlier meaning that it would stop states from being able to create requirements that defacto limit rights. The supreme court decided not to hear the case but Justices Thomas and Gorsich both dissented that decision. Not exactly a promising sign for those who oppose the ability to carry guns. At the end of the day, I don't much care for it but as long as they leave it up to the states, I can live with it because then if I want to own a gun and carry, I just go to the state that allows me to do so. I do support responsible gun ownership. I'm iffy on storing weapons in offsite spot but if you are limiting that to just assualt type weapons, and I would still be allowed to keep shotguns and pistols in the home, I would buy into that. IF the other side is willing to compromise on other issues such as open carry and carry in my vehicle and in other locations. For example, I wouldn't expect the government to require a private entity to allow me to carry on site. That would be absurd. I should be able to carry on federal property and on a military base though. Also, Dems would get a lot of credibility on the matter if they would attach some sort of amendment to the bill that would specifically in writing guarantee that the confiscation of firearms from private citizens is illegal and lay out what guns are ok and which ones aren't. I'm certainly willing to compromise on storing assault rifles at a "sports/hunting" club like they do in Germany if it is in writing that semi-autos are legal and that's not going away and so Diane Feinstein can shut the hell up about it. I'm also cool with restrictions on gun shows, creating a registry, and other common-sense measures that we can all agree on because like I said, I don't want to see any more of these shootings any more than the next guy and something HAS to be done. When I go to the courthouse in the new town I just moved to and they ask for character witnesses that have lived in the local area for at least 7 years, just to buy a pistol that's when things start to get a little much for me.
  16. There's certainly truth to this. Some people like guns because they think it makes them cool or because it makes them feel powerful or whatever. It's certainly more than just the thrill of shooting an automatic rifle. There is also a slippery slope here though and that shouldn't be ignored. I agree though, that there is a credibility issue here and at least you are throwing some ideas out there to help rather than stick your head in the sand and hope it goes away or just learn to live with the violence. There are compromises to be made here, but Dems have GOT to find a better way to frame this argument and reach out to the other side because people, fair or not, 100% believe that the government is capable of taking their guns and these compromises are nothing more than steps towards that end goal.
  17. Everyone has a reasonable position here. Depending on the point of view. There is evidence, such as in Australia, that gun confiscation and restricting gun ownership reduces gun violence. That's a completely valid position to take if your only concern is preventing gun violence. Having said that, I don't think that asking to maintain my constitutional right to bear arms without undue burden of the process to the point that my rights are essentially restricted is an unreasonable position either. Most of us are somewhere between the "don't let anyone have guns" and the "mandate every home has an assault rifle" positions and most of those arguments are valid depending on where you decide to sit. That's kind of the point. Me personally, I choose to support the position that ensures I will never ever be in a position where people can do bad things to me or my family and I am powerless to defend myself.
  18. "Individual donations combined with membership dues still constitute a large majority (over 70%) of the NRA's funding." I know that's what you feel and believe. It's just not based on evidence or fact.
  19. It's on news programs, I heard it on NPR tonight, twitter, facebook, even Cyrus mentioned a measure of holding weapons at a range which is barely a step away from confiscation. It's all over the place and if you don't see it, it's only because you choose not to see it.
  20. Bro, seriously. Turn on your tv. I'm not playing this gotcha game with you.
  21. Don’t be coy. This is a debate that comes up after every shooting. Every time people on the left make arguments along the lines of this wouldn’t have happened if we didn’t have access to guns.
  22. I hope they start doing more back to back games like this.
  23. The team is 5-3 and would be 6-2 if Mariota hadn't gotten injured....
