this constant crusade to prove Mariota is a bust is tiresome, daily thread after thread rehashing exactly the same stuff.   it doesn't take a genius to know he isn't playing well right now,

Pretty much a homer defense of Mariota imo

Ha.  Well discounting the INTs always a homer move.

But there were things to be optimistic about.

Stocker may have scored if Mariota hits him in stride, but here is where my thought process has changed on this play. How bad would we have crushed Mariota if he overthrows him there? We’d say “oh you have to give your guy a chance to make a play when he’s that wide open”, right? Well, that’s exactly what he did. He gave Stocker — who isn’t exactly a guy with an extra gear or vertical to make up for it if the throw is a touch too long — a chance to make the play and put them inside the 5-yard line. I have no issue with the placement on this throw, and frankly McDonald is closing on Stocker even before he slows down so he may not even score with a perfect ball.

This pretty much coincides with the theory that Mariota throws the ball soft so our receivers can catch them.  So, here he under throws on purpose to make sure the ball is caught.

"How bad would we have crushed Mariota if he overthrows him there?"

I thought this was laughable. Of course he'd get slammed if he overthrew a wide open target for an easy TD, why the fuck wouldn't we? Is he worried about Mariota getting crushed or breaking down the play objectively?

What Oilerman doesn’t factor into the equation is that this wasn’t Jonnu running the route. This was a guy who may catch 5 balls all season and was dropping them left and right in camp.

So is making an excuse for every inaccurate throw

It's not going to end well when the people who know better make up excuses.  Mike has a lot of respect, people buy into it.  The team loses.  The first mistake one of the other players on the team makes, they will be after them with the pitchforks.  Just wait, let Adoree get beat or God forbid Davis drops a TD pass.

The Titans dropped today nine points in the AP power polls.  We can deny the truth all we want, but nobody else is.

How many spots did we drop last season when we lost to the Raiders at home?

His throwing base was (reasonably) affected by pass pressure on at least two of these throws. (in that he had to adjust his arm angle/feet/timing/etc).  I think the Miami pass rush affected the pass game more than people are willing to admit. (Somewhat a testament to the "disruption is production" perspective).

In a world where Mariota is credited with a lousy throw (which was a completion), how should we characterize Lewan when he's literally trying to ride out a DE who beat him inside and is running right through the middle of the pocket? Worse than Mariota, honestly.

OK, Lewan grades worse on that play. And? QBs have to deal with pressure and make hard throws. At least good ones do

It also doesn't help to look at all of these in a black or white manner. I agree that the throw to Stocker could have been better, and possibly (not certainly) could have been a TD. It's not a terrible throw, that's nonsense. The other throws were arguably more the product of pass pressure.
