A bunch of the players refused to go so Trump disinvited the entire team (same as he did to the Golden State Warriors). So, Trump's handlers advised him to make the preemptive move to disinvite them as opposed to letting them no-show. It's a basic PR move to feign that you're calling the shots and doesn't signify any type of badassery.
