The mayor of Stockton, California, is leading an experiment with “universal basic income,” which is set to start by giving low-income residents $500 a month, no questions asked.

Mayor Michael Tubbs calls his city “ground zero” for issues like wage stagnation, rising housing prices and loss of middle-class jobs that affect the nation.

This will be the future for everyone once robots take all the jobs.

We won't hear any more complaints from @BigTT either. He'll have his consciousness uploaded to PornHub by then.

I’m not sure if it works on a city level, but it’s good to have an experiment with it.

And yes, it may be the best viable option with automation taking away jobs from humans.

Yeah, I don't think this will work. It will probably just end up as bad PR for a future transition to UBI.

This is an awful idea. It will not work on this level and will only give ammunition to conservatives who don’t understand economics and the future of capitalism through automation. I guess you have to start somewhere, but this is going to fail miserably.

This will fail spectacularly and the right will use it to pummel the concept of actual universal basic income for years to come. $500 isn't enough to solve people's actual problems but just enough to make some very irresponsible choices.

Agreed. Classic damned if you do give away "too much" $$ vs. damned if you don't give enough $$ to allow the project to work.

Good, it's a bad idea.

Not much of a way around that. Conservatives will always be against this. "How dare you use my taxes to pay for people who don't want to work" etc etc. That argument is coming either way.

I'm not in principle against the idea of UBI but are we really at a point where this is a viable policy?  Today?  I mean, I could see in like 20 years but we're at near full employment and I still see people hiring so I'm not sure I get the desperation to make up stagnating wages here.

Yeah hiring for either customer service that wants you to have a bachelor's for a $12/hr job, commissioned sales, or industrial jobs for $11/hr. This job market is pathetic.
