ctm
LOL @Little Earl A border wall costs about 25M a mile. Electronic surveillance costs about 0.5M per mile. If you don't believe me, google the proposal of congressman William Hurd R-Texas who has over 800 miles of Mexican border in his district. ctm
From 2013: The Senate on Thursday passed the most monumental overhaul of U.S. immigration laws in a generation, which would clear the way for millions of undocumented residents to have a chance at citizenship, attract workers from all over the world and devote unprecedented resources for security along the U.S.-Mexico border. The vote was 68-32. Fourteen Republicans crossed the aisle to vote with all Democrats in favor. Thursday’s vote now puts the onus of immigration reform on the Republican-led House, where leaders have been resistant to the Senate legislation. The Gang of Eight bill would essentially revamp every corner of U.S. immigration law, establishing a 13-year pathway to citizenship for millions of undocumented immigrants, with several security benchmarks that have to be met before they can obtain a green card. The measure would not only increases security along the border, but requires a mandatory workplace verification system for employers, trying to ensure no jobs are given to immigrants who are not authorized to work in the United States. https://www.politico.com/story/2013/06/immigration-bill-2013-senate-passes-093530 Republicans have been stalling and refusing to bring a bill to a floor vote for almost 5 years. ctm
Today, the Senate passed S.744, the Border Security, Economic Opportunity and Immigration Modernization Act of 2013, by a vote of 68-32, which includes the Hoeven-Corker border security amendment. “This is the toughest border security measure to ever pass the Senate, and from economic, national security, deficit-reduction and moral standpoints, it’s the right thing to do,” said Corker. “Because of the amendment Senator Hoeven and I added to the bill, this legislation requires an additional 20,000 Border Patrol agents and at least 700 miles of fencing along the southern border, full implementation and activation of $4.5 billion in surveillance technology, an electronic visa entry/exit system, and a mandated E-Verify system for all employers. Passage of this bill gets us one step closer to securing our border in a dramatic way and to solving the immigration problem that we have struggled with for decades.” The amended legislation, according to CBO, would reduce the deficit by $157 billion in the next 10 years and by $690 billion during the second decade. https://www.corker.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/news-list?ID=da80f74a-739c-42ce-86ac-f4d9efc74742

mmmmmbeeer
Even if the GOP is successful pinning this on the dems (which they won't), it won't matter. Not in today's political atmosphere. The president of the United States was just outed for paying $130k in hush money to a porn star a month before the election to hide an affair with her while his wife was still recovering from rearing his child...and it's like 2nd page news. The lines are already drawn and a shutdown isn't going to change shit. Trump and the complicit GOP have awakened a large swatch of voters who have already chosen their "side". It's going to be an absolute shellacking come November, shutdown or not. Might as well take advantage of your electoral outlook now by throwing ye olde penis on the table over DACA and CHIP.
