Looking Back At First 20 Years Of Titans Franchise '99-'18

I was thinking about this the other day.  We have dealt with injury plagued QBs since we moved to Nashville...McNair, Young, Locker and now Mariota.  Even Hassleback missed half of two games.  We are not the Browns bad, but 20 years is a long time.  We need to hire a priest and have them splash holy water around the building...lol.

In the grand scheme of things we've been very lucky QB wise in our first 20 seasons here as the Tennessee Titans.

We had Steve McNair,Neil O'Donnell,Billy Volek,Kerry Collins,Vince Young,Matt Hasselbeck,Jake Locker,Ryan Fitzpatrick,Zach Mettenberger,Charlie Whitehurst,Matt Cassel,Marcus Mariota,etc.

Also many times we had really good backup QB's.

The only stumbling block from '99 thru '18 in our four first round franchise QB's was Locker.

McNair played well espc. thru injuries like a warrior,VY in his limited time played well left with winning record,Mariota in three seasons the team improved every year and he has already made postseason and won a postseason game.

Out of the 4 first round franchise QB's McNair,VY and Mariota all achieved winning records and took the team to the postseason. Only Locker had no postseason activity.

They've only been the Titans for 19 years.  This will be the 20th season in 2018.  So it's hard to evaluate the first 20 years when only 19 have happened.

But for the first 19 years?  I'd say a B-/C+, something in that neighborhood.

I give us a B- for the first 19 years.

Since '99 compared with all other NFL teams we were three wins from being in the top ten in wins with 155 overall. From '99 thru '11 we never went more than two years with losing seasons. Our worst period was 2012 thru 2015 4 straight losing seasons but we bounced back with two straight winning seasons in 2016 and 2017.

We might've thought 4 straight losing seasons was a lot but there were plenty of teams who had much worse than that including....

Jags who prior to this season had a decade straight of losing seasons which included seven seasons with 11 or more losses their record during this was 42-102. Rams who prior to this season had 12 straight losing seasons were 60-131 they had a 5 year period so bad from '07 thru '11 that included two 14 loss, one 13 loss and one 15 loss season they were 15-65. Raiders had 13 straight losing seasons from '03 thru '15 were 63-145 and ten of those seasons had 11 or more losses. From 2008 thru 2017 ten straight losing seasons for Browns record was 38-103 and 9 out of 10 seasons had 11 or more losses. Up until this season the Bills spent 17 straight years with no playoffs and while they werent as bad as some others listed here they had way too many mediocre seasons of 6-10/7-9. Besides going 9-7 in 2004 and 2014 besides that they had mostly losing seasons.

From 2001 thru 2010 the Lions went 39-121 and had ten straight losing seasons but getting a good QB Stafford in the draft helped them get better. For the last 15 years 2003 thru 2017 the 49ers have been terrible except for a three year period from 2011 thru 2013 with Jim Harbaugh where they had three winning seasons and went 36-11-1. Without Harbaugh they were 65-135 with 12 losing seasons and no winning seasons. Prior to his arrival they had 8 straight losing years and when he left they went right back to losing with three straight losing seasons afterward. The Bucs have gone ten straight seasons with no playoffs since 2011 their record is 34-75.

So the Jags endured 10 straight of losing seasons,Rams had 12 straight losing seasons,Raiders had 13 straight losing seasons, Browns have 10 straight losing seasons,Lions had 10 straight losing seasons, 49ers had 8 straight losing seasons, Bills went 17 years with no playoffs until last season, Bucs have gone 10 years with no playoffs, Jets have went 7 years with no playoffs and only 1 winning season,Bears have went 7 years with no playoffs and only 1 winning season including last 4 years where they have lost 11 or more games each year abd are 19-45 the last 4 years.

When i look back on it now especially the 4 straight losing seasons 2012 thru 2015 it really isn't that bad at all when you look at how bad some of the other teams did during the last twenty years since 1999. It seemed long to me those 4 years we were losing but i couldn't imagine going 10 years or longer with no winning seasons and no playoffs either but several teams did it but i am very glad it wasnt us and hope it never is.

**Overall since 1999 the Tennessee Titans have won 155 regular season games and lost 149 which puts them 13th place out of 32 teams. The Titans were four wins from being in the top ten overall.

**Tennessee were ranked 12th out of 32 teams in terms of how many postseason victories they achieved with 6 altogether and that included the Music City Miracle Buffalo game as well as the biggest come from behind victory ever by a NFL road team in history at Kansas City.

**The Titans also had 9 winning seasons,7 postseason appearances,6 postseason victories,3 division titles,3 13 win seasons,2 times NFL best record,2 AFC title and 1 Super Bowl appearance.

**The Titans worst stretch was 4 losing seasons from 2012 thru 2015 the fallout from picking a bust at QB in the 2011 draft. From '99 thru '11 never went more than two years with losing seasons.

**Marcus Mariota in just three years is already the second best passer in Titans 20 year history with 9,476 passing yards with leader Steve McNair having 27,141 yards. If Mariota plays five to six more years he has a good shot at breaking the mark.

**Ironically McNair is third all time in Titans history for rushing yards with 3,439 the first two are Eddie George with 10,009 yards and Chris Johnson with 7,965 yards.

**The top five in receiving yards are: Derrick Mason (6,114),Frank Wycheck (4,958), Nate Washington (4,591),Delanie Walker (4,156) and Drew Bennett (4,033).

So looking back i think we did really well for a small market team in our first 20 years. We did alright when it came to QB's we had McNair from '99 to '05 then VY from '06 to '10 and both left with winning records overall. The only glitch when it came to franchise QB's was Locker to me the only outright bust.

McNair,VY and Mariota all have led the team to winning seasons. As far as backup QB's Neil O'Donnell,Matt Hasselbeck,Kerry Collins,Billy Volek seem to be the best overall. All four of these backups ended up helping the Titans achieve winning seasons at some point.

At RB i honestly think we were blessed overall in that area. We basically had two 10,000 yard backs in Eddie George and Chris Johnson. Some fans bitch about CJ but i happen to think he was entertaining and one of the best of his era as he set numerous records too bad things didn't click for us in other areas during this time. I liked Chris Brown and Travis Henry a lot. We hit a slow patch for a couple years in 2014 and 2015. Demarco Murray was a big reason we had a good year in 2016 as well as Derrick Henry in 2017.

As for our linemen on offense i think the cornerstones were Michael Roos/David Stewart they were bookends for a decade. Kevin Mawae played well for us after he left the Jets.

As for kickers we had some colorful ones but my fave will always be Rob Bironas he was clutch for a good while. Joe Nedney if i remember helped us defeat Steelers in postseason in 2002 i believe.

At WR/TE i think my two favorites all time are Derrick Mason and Nate Washington. I think Washington was underrated and made some great catches during his time here. Delanie Walker is a huge part of the last five years. Drew Bennett was good for a few seasons. Can't forget Frank Wycheck at all.

On defense we have had some good ones like Jevon Kearse. He had a great rookie season that helped propel the team into the postseason. Really loved watching Albert Haynesworth play and in 2007 and 2008 he was a big part of the success then. Mr Monday Night Keith Bulluck lasted ten long years here and his best moment was three picks vs Saints in 2007. I loved watching Kyle Vanden Bosch he was one of my all time favorites. As for the secondary Samari Rolle will always be given top notch status. I also loved Cortland Finnegan he was scrappy and always fun to watch. I liked Verner ATV a lot but some thought he was overrated.

Like i said before we didn't have too many bad times the first 20 years and our worst losing streak was just 4 seasons which isn't too bad when you wonder how fans of other teams dealt with stuff like Buffalo missing the playoffs 17 straight years with only two winning seasons from 2000 thru 2016 before getting lucky in 2017.

Cleveland has had one playoff appearance and two winning seasons the past 20 years. Raiders had 13 straight losing seasons and only one postseason appearance since 2002. Rams had 12 straight losing seasons and last postseason appearance was 2004 before this season,Jax 10 straight of losing seasons including seven seasons with 11 or more losses before they turned it around in 2017,The Bucs have gone ten straight seasons with no playoffs since 2011 their record is 34-75. Jets and Bears have went 7 years with no playoffs and only 1 winning season,Bears have lost 11 or more games each year the last four years.

The best thing that happened for us is breaking that playoff drought we were very close to being compared to Cleveland for longest playoff drought something we definitely are glad to have no part of. Now Tampa 2007 and Cleveland 2002 along with the NY Jets/Chicago 2010 have the longest drought.  Another good thing is winning a playoff game because 2004 was quite a while back as the last time we won before we got the KC win.

So we got a franchise QB with what looks like his best coordinator yet,we dropped a head coach most of the fanbase was sick of and got a new head coach not just a retread. We are coming off two straight winning seasons,a postseason appearance as well as a postseason win with our best GM in ages who has put together a pretty good team the last two seasons. We also have new uniforms to look forward to as well as what should be an active free agency and draft. IMHO things are looking pretty damn good right now. Best they have in many years if you are a Titans fan.

One of the main reasons its very important for us to bring in a good quality backup QB.

Remember 2008?    Out starter went down but with our backup we still managed to get a 13-3 season.

You never know it could happen again. If we had a good roster and Mariota got hurt in game three or four we could still go a good distance with a good backup like Gabbert?  McCown?? Smith???

Our first twenty years in my opinion hasn't been that bad. We were 13th overall with 155-149 record and four wins from being top ten overall. We also had six playoff wins thats not too shabby either.

Also our worst stretch without any winning seasons was only 4 years. Many teams have had it way worse than that sometimes going 8,10 or even a decade or longer with no winning seasons. For some reason i dont ever see us going too long without winning.

Also we have a small streak going with two winning seasons and another this year would make three straight winning seasons.

Great post! That was very enjoyable, thanks for putting so much effort into that. Really good stuff.

If I reflect on how 20 years have gone with the Titans, my instinct is to say that it's been more good than bad. But I know that is colored by 1999-2000. However, the fact that we only have 3 division titles in 20 years is brutal.  Getting to the Super Bowl carries a lot of weight, but losing your division year after year is not a good barometer of success.

Same here def more good than bad.

As far as only having 3 division titles between Indy having Manning/Luck and then in the last half decade Houston lucked up with the best defensive player in years with Watt it was definitely hard to get a lot of titles.

2018 is the Titans 20th season. Whats really interesting is if the Titans finish the 2018 season with a really good record they have a shot at being in the top 10 overall in total wins compared with all NFL teams from '99 through '18 which is twenty years.

Right now the Titans are 13th overall with 155 wins after 19 seasons. Anyway the Saints are 9th with 160 wins,Cowboys are 10th with 158 wins,Vikings are 11th with 157 wins,Giants are 12th with 156 wins and the Titans are 13th with 155 wins.  The Titans can move up into the 9th,10th,11th or 12th spot this season if they do better than either New Orleans,Dallas,Minnesota or N.Y. Giants in 2018. All those teams had winning seasons last year with the exception of New York.

This proves that in the Titans short twenty year history they have placed themselves firmly near the top ten overall in terms of wins and have been among the better teams in the league since they started in 1999.

2018 is the Titans 20th season overall and if the Titans can get more wins this year than the Giants,Vikings and Cowboys there is a good chance the team could land in the top ten in wins overall during the teams first 20 seasons when compared with other NFL franchises during this span.

Looking back the Titans first two decades of existence were fun in my opinion i wouldn't trade it for anything.

We are right outside the top ten in total wins with 155 wins compared with all other franchises during the same time span. We went to a Super Bowl. We were close to going to a second Super Bowl when we faced Oakland in 2002. We played in 2 AFC Championship games. We won 7 playoff games. We had 3 seperate 13 win seasons no team had more except New England and Indy. We had 9 winning seasons,We clinched postseason 7 different seasons.

Even had seasons that were fun going down to the wire like 2006 and 2009 both years VY led the Titans on long winning streaks to help the team hit .500 both times and also in 2009 CJ set the all purpose yardage record and also should have the rush record but he was cheated by Hoculi crooked ass official.

The only time that was hard was what i call the Locker/Webster/Nightmare years from 2012 through 2015 4 straight losing seasons due to these fumbledicks. Out of the ashes of that shitpile arose Mariota/JRob like a phoenix through fire.

However looking back i honestly thought we had hell long term with those 4 years and i was so wrong, lol.

Imagine going 18 years with only two 9-7 seasons and no playoffs(Bills)

15 years from 2003 through 2017 with only 1 winning season/playoff berth(Raiders)

10 straight losing years no playoffs from 2001 through 2010(Lions)

Nearly 10 straight losing years from 2008 through 2017 finally had winning season/playoffs in 2017(Jags)

13 straight years from 2004 through 2016 no winning seasons/playoffs(Rams)

Since 2002 has been 16 years and has only made postseason 2 times(Miami)

2008 through 2017 this team has went 10 straight years of no playoffs(Tampa)

Our little 4 years of misery was pretty quick compared to the decade plus clusterfuck these fans of the teams above dealt with. Browns,Bills,Raiders,Lions,Jags,Rams,Dolphins and Bucs now those fans went through very long periods of HELL.

I would gladly take our team and things we did and so would a lot of fans of other teams that didn't do jack shit the last 20 years like the Browns,Bills,Lions,Redskins,Bengals,Jaguars,Dolphins, etc. We were good enough the last 20 years to be 3 wins from the top 10 overall in wins.

JRob is gonna make sure we lift that gotdamn Lombardi trophy i can't wait to see Mariota rub that sonofabitch and kiss it before taking it home on the plane.
