Changing divisions for 5 teams and the NFL map makes sense

Recommended Posts

I know, we've done this before, but it's the middle of the off season...

Moving Miami into our division, Baltimore into the AFC East and Indy into the AFC North makes a lot of sense.

Moving the Panthers into the NFC East and the Cowboys into the south also makes a lot of sense. (I know, they'll never move the Cow Paddies)

A total of 5 teams move divisions.

Always wondered why the Cowboys were in the East and the Panthers were in the South.

Because they aren't going to take the Cowboys out of a division with all of their traditional rivals.

I could see swapping Baltimore, Indy, and Miami. Miami has traditional rivalries with the AFC East but I feel like they aren't as strong as the Cowboys' division rivalries (though Miami fans may differ). Indy hasn't been rivals with the AFC south all that long. And Baltimore has fierce rivalries with Pitt and Cle (for obvious reasons) but again they aren't long time rivalries.

Jax would love to have Miami as a rival; they have tried to generate interest outside of Northern FL for a long time, even if most of FL still pulls for the Dolphins, it would draw more attention to the Jags if they were playing the phins twice a year instead of once or twice every four years. They have a little bit of a following in south GA, but by and large GA residents are way more Falcons fans even if they live closer to Jax.

The Panthers are a 20 year old expansion team. The Cowboys are a charter franchise of the NFL that are strong historical rivals with all three of their division foes. And they're JJ's Cowboys so they're going to get what they want.

They let it be known they would not only vote against but would try and get others to not vote for any realignment plan that took them out of the NFC east when it happened. It was basically ok to make other teams switch conferences but Jerry was going to have his way.

The whole idea of having 8 divisions is screwing up the NFL with 7-9/8-8 division winners making the playoffs almost every year and people not wanting to expand the playoffs to 14 teams which makes perfect sense with a 32-team league.

This is how the NFL should look with their traditional 6 division format:

AFC East

  • Buffalo
  • Indianapolis
  • Jacksonville
  • Miami
  • New England
  • NY Jets

AFC Central

  • Baltimore
  • Cincinnati
  • Cleveland
  • Pittsburgh
  • Tennessee

AFC West

  • Denver
  • Houston
  • Kansas City
  • LA Chargers
  • Oakland

NFC East

  • Atlanta
  • Carolina
  • Dallas
  • NY Giants
  • Philadelphia
  • Washington

NFC Central

  • Chicago
  • Detroit
  • Green Bay
  • Minnesota
  • Tampa Bay

NFC West

  • Arizona
  • LA Rams
  • New Orleans
  • San Francisco
  • Seattle

The schedule works out perfectly with 8 divisions of 4 teams.

All that does is make division games almost meaningless with only 6 division games in a 16-game season.

Having 5/6 team divisions makes them meaningful again with 8-10 division games for every team. Everyone wins.

No, division games are still more important than any other game. And it's not like it's much different from back when it was 6 divisions of 5 teams.

you'd have 4 divisions with 8 division games and 2 with 10. its not fair to certain divisions.

More importantly than it not being "fair" it's harder to do NFL schedules that way
